Job Description
The Mechanical Systems Installation Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development and integration of mechanical systems within aerospace platforms. This role focuses on producing detailed installation designs that ensure mechanical systems are effectively and safely incorporated into aircraft structures, meeting stringent industry standards and regulatory requirements. The successful candidate works closely with multidisciplinary teams to translate conceptual designs into practical, manufacturable solutions while maintaining compliance with quality and safety protocols.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Develop, review and produce detailed mechanical installation designs for aerospace systems in accordance with project requirements and industry standards.
Collaborate with electrical, structural and systems engineers to ensure seamless integration of mechanical components within the overall aircraft architecture.
Apply engineering principles and design standards to ensure mechanical installations meet performance, safety and reliability criteria.
Conduct feasibility studies and technical assessments to support design decisions and identify potential risks or constraints.
Create and maintain accurate design documentation, including drawings, specifications and installation instructions.
Utilise computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce and modify 3D models and detailed drawings.
Review and incorporate feedback from testing, manufacturing and quality assurance teams to refine installation designs.
Ensure compliance with aerospace industry regulations, company procedures and health and safety standards throughout the design process.
Support project management by providing technical input for schedules, resource planning and cost estimates related to mechanical installations.
Participate in design reviews and technical meetings to communicate progress and resolve design issues promptly.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
Demonstrable experience in mechanical systems design, preferably within the aerospace or aviation sector.
Proficiency in computer-aided design software, such as CATIA, SolidWorks or equivalent tools.
Strong understanding of mechanical installation processes and aerospace manufacturing practises.
Familiarity with industry standards such as BS EN, ISO and relevant aerospace certification requirements.
Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to liaise with multidisciplinary teams.
Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, accurate design outputs.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
Previous contract experience within aerospace programmes or projects.
Knowledge of installation and integration of fluid, pneumatic or electrical mechanical systems in aircraft.
Experience with certification and compliance processes related to aerospace design.
Familiarity with project management methodologies and software.
Experience
A minimum of three years’ experience in mechanical design engineering, ideally within aerospace or a closely aligned engineering industry.
Proven track record of delivering mechanical installation designs from concept through to production readiness.
Experience working within cross-functional teams and contributing effectively to project objectives.
Knowledge and Skills
In-depth knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and aerospace installation requirements.
Competence in producing and interpreting technical drawings and specifications.
Strong CAD modelling skills with the ability to create complex assemblies and detailed components.
Understanding of materials, manufacturing processes and their impact on design decisions.
Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload effectively.
Strong analytical skills to evaluate design performance and identify improvements.
Working Conditions
Based primarily within an office environment at the Filton site with occasional visits to manufacturing or test facilities as required.
Standard full-time working hours with flexibility to meet project deadlines.
Contract role with potential for extension depending on project needs.
Engagement with multidisciplinary teams across various locations may require occasional travel within the United Kingdom
