Mechanical Engineer
Location: Peterborough
Hours: Monday Friday, 7:30am 4:30pm
15-minute morning break
45-minute lunch break
Overtime available when required
Site work required on occasion
Salary: £30,000 £37,000 per year (depending on experience)
About the Role
We are seeking a hands-on Mechanical Engineer with strong mechanical and engine component knowledge. This role is ideally suited to someone who has progressed from a mechanic or practical mechanical background into a more advanced engineering position.
You will be responsible for the disassembly, inspection, preparation, and reassembly of engine and mechanical systems, producing high-quality components for engineering and exhibition displays. A strong eye for detail, confidence working with precision components, and experience using abrasive tooling are essential.
Key Responsibilities Mechanical& Engine Component Work
* Carry out detailed disassembly of engine components and mechanical assemblies with accuracy and care
* Inspect and assess component condition during disassembly
* Reassemble components precisely using documentation, diagrams, or original build standards
Abrasive Tooling & Component Preparation
* Use abrasive tools including grinders, polishers, and deburring tools to clean and finish components to exhibition-standard quality
* Work closely with surface finishing teams (polishing, painting, coating) to ensure correct preparation
* Maintain safe working practices and prevent damage to components during processing
Documentation & Cataloguing
* Accurately catalogue components during disassembly using part logs, diagrams, and photographic records
* Maintain and update documentation to support correct reassembly and internal quality standards
Collaboration & Display Preparation
* Work with fabricators to design and build stands, supports, and crates for transportation and display
* Support exhibition preparation to ensure all components meet visual and technical expectations
Quality & Technical Standards
* Carry out quality assurance checks throughout disassembly, preparation, and reassembly
* Ensure all work meets engineering, safety, and aesthetic standards
Qualifications & ExperienceEssential
* Strong mechanical or mechanic background with hands-on experience of engines, generators, hydraulic systems, or similar assemblies
* Proven experience in engine disassembly and reassembly
* Confident and safe use of abrasive tools and surface preparation equipment
* Excellent attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship
* Ability to produce and follow accurate technical documentation
* Strong communication skills and ability to work well within a team
Desirable
* Experience working with hydraulic valves, generators, or precision-engineered assemblies
* Experience supporting exhibitions, engineering displays, or technical demonstrations
