Senior Software Developer – Alcumus (Cardiff, UK)
Alcumus is building innovative software to enable safer workplaces worldwide, supporting a global network of over 50,000 organisations. The Senior Developer will work within a multi‑functional Scrum squad, collaborating with developers, DevOps engineers, QA analysts and product owners to design, develop and maintain high‑quality applications.
Responsibilities
* Be an integral part of the development team, actively supporting development of tools, services and platforms.
* Review and contribute to the ongoing improvement of team practices and ways of working to increase effectiveness and delivery.
* Collaborate with other teams within and across the Technology department to identify improvements to existing processes and services, or to develop new services.
* Work closely with stakeholders in collection and documentation of user requirements and development of user stories.
* Plan, write, test and maintain code for web, mobile and desktop business applications in an Agile environment.
* Investigate production escalations and issues, troubleshooting and providing solutions.
* Recommend on architectural and technical decisions and participate in peer reviews of designs and code.
* Assist in production releases and updates, working closely with quality teams to maintain standards.
* Provide third‑level support to business users.
* Adapt and learn to work with other languages/platforms where required.
* Keep up to date with the latest relevant technological innovations.
Qualifications
* Proficiency in microservices architecture and RESTful API development.
* A desire to become a lead developer.
* Awareness of AI tools such as GitHub Copilot.
* Experience with relational databases (SQL, MySQL) including triggers.
* Understanding of modern software architectures (microservices, event‑driven, CQRS).
* Hands‑on expertise of AWS (ECS, Lambda, API Gateway, ECR, S3), Docker and unit testing (TDD, JUnit, Mockito).
* Experience with version control such as GitHub.
* Competence with Microsoft Office applications.
* Strong problem‑solving skills, attention to detail and eagerness to learn.
* Ability to work effectively in an Agile/Scrum team.
* Excellent organisational and communication skills.
* Understanding of CI/CD mechanisms such as GitHub Actions.
* Familiarity with Agile tooling (Jira, Confluence).
* Awareness of security best practices (OWASP, ISO 27001, ISO 27032).
* Degree in a relevant discipline.
