Accounts Assistant / Legal CashierLocation: Southend-on-Sea
Salary: £27,000 – £35,000 depending on experience
We are seeking an organised and detail-oriented Accounts Assistant / Legal Cashier to support the day-to-day operation of a busy legal accounts department. The successful candidate will have previous experience within a legal finance environment and a strong understanding of conveyancing and client account procedures.
Key Responsibilities- Assisting with the financial administration of residential conveyancing matters including sales, purchases, remortgages, and private client/probate transactions.
- Processing daily financial transactions including receipts, payments, transfers, journals, credits, and debit entries accurately and within required timescales.
- Carrying out daily and month-end bank reconciliations and resolving any discrepancies promptly.
- Managing petty cash processes including recording transactions, handling reimbursements, and completing regular reconciliations.
- Maintaining strict confidentiality in relation to client and office accounts at all times.
- Verifying bank details and conducting payment security checks including Confirmation of Payee (CoP) procedures.
- Reviewing completion statements, invoices, and supporting financial documentation for accuracy.
- Preparing and posting property completions while ensuring all associated financial records are updated correctly.
- Ensuring SDLT submissions and payments are processed within statutory deadlines.
- Supporting credit control activities including preparing correspondence, chasing outstanding balances, and responding to finance-related queries from clients and colleagues.
- Monitoring Land Registry and compliance-related postings and ensuring records are updated promptly.
- Processing and reconciling compliance fees and transferring balances where appropriate.
- Investigating dormant balances and assisting with resolution procedures in line with regulatory requirements.
- Producing financial and matter-related reports through the firm’s case management and accounting systems.
- Monitoring banking activity including allocation of incoming funds to the correct ledgers.
- Handling cheque and cash payments, preparing banking documentation, and ensuring accurate recording of receipts.
- Ensuring compliance with internal finance procedures together with SRA and/or CLC Accounts Rules.
Skills & Experience Required- Previous experience working within a legal cashiering or legal accounts role.
- Working knowledge of conveyancing transactions and client account processes.
- Familiarity with legal accounting systems such as LEAP or similar case management software.
- Strong understanding of legal accounts compliance and regulatory requirements.
- Excellent attention to detail with strong organisational skills.
- Ability to manage workloads effectively and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Professional communication skills and confidence dealing with internal and external stakeholders.
