Offer Description
Do you have a PhD in HCI, Computer Science, or Related? Are you interested in innovating interactive technologies to help #MakeNormalBetter for all? Are you an excellent and committed researcher? Join WellthLab at the University of Southampton.
The WellthLab is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher with a background in Computer Science, specializing in Human Computer Interaction or related fields.
The WELLTHLAB Approach: Our approach, grounded in Inbodied Interaction, challenges mainstream health tech paradigms by emphasizing minimal dose interaction design—minimal-data capture and skill-building to help people reduce technology use.
Our lab operates within the School of Electronics and Computer Science, collaborating across disciplines like physiology, sociology, psychology, medicine, and design. We maintain a culture of critical reflection, technical excellence, and social impact.
The WellthLab Community Ethos: We aim to help researchers thrive by fostering project collaborations and leadership opportunities. We value qualities like collaboration, leadership, and the ability to succeed both independently and in teams.
Themes: Our projects include:
* Audio XR: CERA: Exploring how interaction with physical objects and audio-based AR can enhance memory and learning.
* Humanizing Computer Mediated Communication: Exploring what it means to feel more “human” online.
* Eliminating AGING: Helping elders build strength and balance using unwearable devices.
* You are not a Plant: Reimagining workplaces for health and well-being.
* Sonification for learning, co-presence, and reduced cognitive load.
We focus on physical, peripheral, and environmental interactions with devices inspired by Greenberg’s Phidgets, emphasizing non-wearable, contextual health interactions.
Our mission is to help #MakeNormalBetter for all at scale, based on human-centered co-design. We seek HCI researchers passionate about building interactive technologies to enhance human skills, knowledge, and resilience across all ages and settings.
If you are interested and capable of tackling these challenges for real-world impact, we encourage you to apply. For questions, contact Prof M.C. Schraefel at rit-rf@nopain2.org.
Note: The University values equality, diversity, and inclusion. It is among the top 1% of world universities and top 10 in the UK. The university is committed to sustainability, awarded the Platinum EcoAward. The WellthLab promotes social justice, sustainability, and a circular economy.
*Applicants working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD may be considered for Research Fellow positions. The title of Research Fellow is awarded upon PhD completion; prior to that, the position is titled Senior Research Assistant.
