Sister/Charge Nurse, Neonatal Unit (34.5 hours) – Band 7
We are the Lead Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for Surrey, dedicated to providing expert care for up to 28 of the sickest and most complex babies. Our team employs the latest non-invasive respiratory support techniques, including delivery room Vapotherm and SNIPPV. We also host the Surrey arm of the Neonatal Transport Service and have a neonatal community outreach team based within our unit.
We are passionate about Family Integrated Care (FIC) and believe in partnering with parents in the care of their babies. Our commitment to excellence has earned us accreditation in the Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) and the Bliss Baby Charter. Additionally, we have a Transitional Care Unit (TCU) where parents can stay with their babies until discharge. Rotation onto night and day shifts.

Responsibilities
Joint responsibility with other Unit Sisters for the operational management and service delivery processes within the Neonatal and Special Care Unit. This includes line management of ward staff, managing resources within a defined budget, and contributing to the corporate agenda.
Lead and promote a quality service using research and evidence-based practice, including setting and monitoring clinical standards.
Act as the clinical lead within the Unit on a shift basis and ensure safe staffing across the Paediatric Division.
Lead a programme of standard setting and audit to implement changes that meet patient requirements and improve standards. Seek feedback from carers.
Rotation onto night and day shifts.
Management / Governance / Education
Clinical Practice and Professional Leadership Responsibilities: Lead and supervise a safe, high standard of nursing practice and the delivery of evidence-based patient care in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, the Trust’s Strategy for Nursing, and Trust/Unit Policies and Procedures. Lead by example in the demonstration of high standards of clinical care. Act as an advocate for the neonate. Contribute to the corporate nursing and patient care agenda. Develop and maintain own competence in agreed basic and advanced clinical skills. Act as a source of specialty expertise within the Directorate and across the Trust as appropriate. Ensure that clinical and housekeeping practice follows policies designed to prevent hospital-acquired infection. Promote health education for patients and their carers. Actively promote and implement research and evidence-based practice. Lead a programme of standard setting and audit to implement change that meets patient requirements and improves standards, seeking feedback from carers.
Management Responsibilities: Deputise for the Matron in her absence. Handle complaints and incidents in collaboration with Divisional Governance Team. Investigate Datix incidents and complaints using Root Cause Analysis and provide reports. Develop, implement, monitor and evaluate action plans based on reflective practice. Contribute to recruitment and staff retention. Deploy staff effectively with appropriate skill mix within budget. Manage the ward in line with budget and contract requirements. Promote collaborative working with the multi-disciplinary team within the Unit and the Trust.
Education: Maintain a suitable learning environment for all ward staff. Liaise with the CPE to provide additional CPE support. Ensure registered nurses understand educational objectives and act as a mentor, assessing performance where appropriate.
Clinical Governance: In conjunction with the Head of Nursing/Matron, lead planning and implementation of quality and risk management initiatives and targets (including CNST, RPST, Controls Assurance). Develop and maintain evidence-based quality standards that are regularly audited and drive necessary changes. Participate in clinical benchmarking programs with the Head of Nursing/Matron.
Learning and Development: Maintain professional standards and continuing education through mandatory training and study sessions, and share learnings with the team.
