The Principal BI Analyst – Cancer is a senior technical role within the Performance and Business
Intelligence function, accountable for shaping the Trust’s strategic approach to cancer data
management. The post holder will lead the design, governance, and delivery of cancer intelligence
frameworks, ensuring the Trust not only meets but anticipates national standards, driving continuous
improvement in patient outcomes through data intelligence.
They will act as the Trust’s subject matter expert on cancer pathways, influencing executive decision-
making, and representing the organisation at regional and national forums. The role requires
advanced analytical judgement, the ability to resolve highly complex issues, and the authority to set
standards for cancer BI reporting across the Trust.
This role is the Trust’s hands on expert for cancer reporting logic and data structures. In collaboration
with data teams, the post holder will design, own, and maintain the SQL logic, tables, and pipelines
that underpin cancer reporting and national submissions
Main duties of the job
This role provides senior strategic leadership for cancer performance and NHS returns, with accountability for the oversight, quality and interpretation of national cancer datasets including COSD, CWT and RTT. The post-holder leads on complex cancer performance analysis, developing predictive analytics to forecast compliance with national standards and proactively manage risks. They present authoritative performance insights to the Senior Leadership Team, balancing national requirements, clinical priorities and operational realities, and plan and coordinate cancer performance reporting across multiple stakeholders to ensure accuracy, timeliness and alignment with Trust-wide objectives.
In addition, the role leads the optimisation of cancer pathways and business intelligence through digital innovation, including the strategic design of EPIC workflows and the adoption of advanced BI tools. Acting as the Trust’s senior BI lead for cancer, the post-holder drives service improvement projects, supports business cases and investment decisions, embeds EDI and QIA governance into service change, and ensures data quality, automation and self-service reporting. They work closely with EPR and Cogito teams to meet internal and national reporting requirements, integrate cancer intelligence into executive dashboards, and provide expert guidance, knowledge transfer and coaching to BI and cancer service colleagues across the organisation.
