Research Associate in Vibro-Acoustic Sensing

Job Details

Organisation: The University of Sheffield

Department: Mechanical, Aerospace & Civil Engineering - Faculty of Engineering

Location: Sheffield

Contract Type: Full-time, Fixed Term for 3 years

Are you experienced in using applied maths to model acoustic problems and analyze data? Do you enjoy working collaboratively?

This role offers an exciting opportunity to apply your modelling and analytical skills in building and testing an acoustic monitoring tool to detect hidden defects in sewer pipes as part of the EU multi-institutional project AI:LINERS. The work will be carried out in collaboration with Eindhoven University of Technology, KWB Kompetenzzentrum Wasser Berlin, water utilities companies in Germany and Spain, and other EU companies providing water infrastructure inspection tools. Working within the internationally renowned acoustic group at the University of Sheffield, you will develop an approach for remote acoustic sensing of defects invisible to classical imagery inspections (e.g., CCTV) in sewer pipes treated with CIPP lining, employing powerful semi-analytical and hybrid (numerical + analytical) acoustic simulations. During the project, there will be opportunities to materialize this approach into acoustic sensing technology and test it at the UK national research facility ICAIR and with underground assets of EU water utility companies. The project is funded by Horizon Europe and involves regular research visits to EU project partners.

Next Steps in the Recruitment Process

The selection process is expected to take place in late July or early August. It will include interviews and a lab tour at the University of Sheffield for shortlisted candidates. Candidates will be informed of their progression status by late July. Support, equipment, or adjustments to facilitate participation in the recruitment process can be arranged by contacting mac-recruitment@sheffield.ac.uk.

Benefits include:

* Minimum of 41 days annual leave including bank holidays and closure days (pro-rata), with options to purchase additional days.
* Flexible working arrangements, including hybrid options.
* Discounts on shopping, dining, and travel.
* Staff networks for social interaction, peer support, and development (e.g., Race Equality, LGBT+, Women’s, and Parent’s networks).
* Recognition awards for exceptional contributions.
* Development opportunities through learning and mentoring schemes aligned with Academic Career Pathways.
* Family-friendly policies such as paid leave for emergencies, menopause support, fertility treatment leave, and more.

We are a Disability Confident Employer. Applicants with disabilities who meet the essential criteria will be invited to participate in the next stage of the selection process.

Closing Date: 20/07/2025
