Title: Assistant Tax Manager

Location: National - Any GT Office Location

Contract Type: Permanent or Part-Time - minimum 4 days.

We are looking to appoint an Assistant Tax Manager (Mixed Taxes) to join our Group Tax team within Group Finance. This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified tax or accounting professional to develop a broad, commercially focused tax skillset within a FTSE 250, Tier 1 construction and infrastructure group.

Working as part of a small, high-impact central tax team, the role has a strong focus on VAT and CIS, while also providing exposure to Employment Taxes, Corporation Tax, SDLT, Senior Accounting Officer (SAO) and the Corporate Criminal Offence (CCO) regime. It is ideally suited to someone who aspires to progress into a senior tax leadership role in the future.

You will work closely with colleagues across Group Finance, the Shared Services Centre (SSC), operational teams and external advisers, supporting tax compliance, governance and risk management across the Group.

What You Will Be Doing:

* Support the management of the Group's VAT position, with particular focus on the construction sector, including standard-rated, zero-rated and reverse-charge supplies.
* Review VAT returns prepared by the Shared Services Centre, ensuring accuracy, completeness and appropriate treatment of complex transactions, ensuring MTD (Making Tax Digital) compliance.
* Review imports of goods and services on a monthly basis and ensure that the relevant reverse charge values are included in the VAT returns for foreign services, and postponed VAT accounting is correctly processed for foreign goods.
* Carry out regular checks to ensure compliance with the Corporate Criminal Offence (CCO) legislation regarding non-VAT registered suppliers.
* Review the sales data and ensure that End User statements have been completed by customers when required.
* Supporting Head of Tax in managing VAT treatment of complex construction transactions, including domestic reverse charge and land and property rules.
* Supporting Head of Tax in providing internal advisory support on VAT issues across tenders, procurement, and commercial contracts.
* Monitor changes in VAT law affecting the construction sector and support implementation across the business.
* Manage VAT inspections, audits, and HMRC correspondence.
* Maintain Tax team mailbox for VAT queries, answer queries, escalate to Head of Tax as necessary.
* Review and submit monthly CIS submissions for all construction-related activities and ensure compliance with HMRC rules.
* Provide guidance when required on subcontractor verifications, CIS deduction processing including payments to HMRC and the issuing of payment and deduction statements.
* Work with commercial and project teams to ensure proper CIS setup and classification of suppliers.
* Maintain robust controls and documentation around CIS to reduce risk of penalties.
* Assist with CIS queries from the business, providing clear and pragmatic guidance
* Maintain Tax team mailbox for CIS queries, answer queries, escalate to Head of Tax as necessary.
* Manage and respond to HMRC correspondence regarding CIS.
* Work with the Director of Property to ensure SDLT compliance across the group and that the required payments of tax have been made.
* Support compliance and advisory work across employment taxes, including PAYE, NICs and benefits.
* Assist with Corporation Tax matters, including data gathering, review and liaison with advisers.
* Support the Senior Accounting Officer (SAO) certification process, including controls testing and documentation.
* Assist with maintaining and embedding the Group's Corporate Criminal Offence (CCO) prevention framework.
* Work closely with the Shared Services Centre to support continuous improvement in tax processes and controls.
* Build effective relationships with finance and operational stakeholders across the business. Work with project finance teams to provide clear guidance on VAT and CIS treatment of project activities.
* Support responses to HMRC enquiries and audits, working alongside external advisers where required.
* Contribute to the development and maintenance of tax policies, procedures and internal guidance.
* Contribute to improvements in systems and processes relating to VAT and CIS.
* Assist in external audit queries and support the wider finance function as needed.

About You:

* Fully qualified CTA / ACA / ACCA or equivalent experience.
* Minimum 3–5 years of relevant tax experience.
* Good working knowledge of UK VAT and the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS).
* Experience in managing VAT compliance and advisory in a high-volume transactional construction environment or dealing with client queries and compliance .
* Working knowledge of accounting and ERP systems (e.g., Oracle).
* Excellent Excel and data-handling skills.
