Apprentice Construction Design and Build Technician
CoTrain – Guildford (GU3 1LR)
Wage: £16,224 to £25,775.88, depending on age
Salaries are paid monthly on the last working day of each month. Travel expenses are paid weekly via our expense process and usually reimbursed within 48 hours of submission.
Training course: Construction Design and Build Technician (Level 4)
Hours: Office hours 08:30 am – 04:30 pm four days a week; one college day 09:00 am – 04:00 pm. Total 39 hours per week.
Duration: 3 years – starting 1 September 2026
What you'll do at work
* Support the Planning and Design department to formulate construction build plans for commercial projects.
* Work across departments to gain a holistic understanding of initial concept, design, and end use.
* Ensure projects progress by applying new methods, materials, and building techniques while complying with regulations, safety standards and client brief.
* Monitor and collect on‑site data to track budgets, efficiency, build methods and waste management, ensuring sustainability.
* Communicate effectively with client, design, planning, estimating, quantity surveying and build teams.

Training
Apprenticeships include specialist training outside of working hours.
Training provider: The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).
Training course details
* Apply mathematical, statistical and analytical tools to solve technical and design problems.
* Interpret performance data to select compliant materials and components.
* Produce design and technical drawings using software such as BIM, CAD and other models.
* Comply with industry standards, CDM, statutory regulations, and codes of practice.
* Conduct risk assessments and ensure health, safety and welfare regulations are met.
* Apply sustainable development principles and assess impact.
* Maintain and manage a Common Data Environment (CDE) ensuring data integrity and security.
* Conduct site inspections, report findings and comply with sustainability regulations.
* Optimise energy use and site potential through efficient design solutions.
* Apply project management techniques such as budgeting, estimating, cost control and forecasting.
* Use computer‑based software systems for project management (e.g., BIM tools, data analytics).
* Interoperate with internal and external stakeholders using sector‑specific terminology.
Requirements
GCSE in Maths and English (grade 4). Share any other relevant qualifications and industry experience.

Other requirements
Some projects may require a DBS check.
After this apprenticeship
Upon completion, you may be interviewed for a graduate or management program, or could work as a Planner within the office to further your experience.
