SEN HLTA (Higher Level Teaching Assistant)

We are working in partnership with a well-established specialist SEN school in Swindon that supports children and young people aged 5-19 with complex learning needs and Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
The school provides a highly structured, nurturing environment with small classes, high adult support and a strong emphasis on communication, independence and learning for life. Pupils present with a range of needs including autism, communication and interaction needs, moderate to severe learning difficulties, sensory differences and physical or medical needs.
They are seeking a skilled and confident SEN HLTA to play a key role in supporting learning, communication and engagement across the school. This position is temporary whilst the school appoint, however, they do encourage applications from their supply team - so this is a great opportunity to open up into a permanent role!
The Role
As a SEN HLTA, you will:
1. Deliver planned learning activities to individuals, small groups or classes during teacher absence
2. Support pupils to access learning through clear routines, visual supports and structured approaches
3. Adapt learning to meet a wide range of abilities and needs, including communication, sensory and cognitive differences
4. Work closely with teachers and therapists to implement EHCP targets and individual support strategies
5. Support pupils' emotional regulation, independence and personal development
6. Act as a consistent, calm and reliable adult within a highly supportive team
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
7. HLTA status or substantial experience working at HLTA level within a specialist SEN setting - opportunities to gain the qualification for those without
8. Strong experience supporting pupils with complex learning needs, autism and communication difficulties
9. Confidence delivering structured learning activities and supporting engagement at different developmental levels
10. An understanding of AAC, visual supports, sensory strategies or SALT-informed practice
11. A calm, patient and adaptable approach, with excellent teamwork skills
Experience in special schools, SEND provisions or complex needs settings is essential.
