Main duties of the job
AP staff assist the Biomedical Scientists in the examination of a wide range of clinical samples from patients, to determine the laboratory diagnosis, and appropriate treatment, of infection. There will also be a requirement to rotate within the roles that the current Band 4 team undertake as well as assisting BMS staff with sensitivity, identification work, management of band 2/3 staff and working in the following sections: Blood cultures/ Miscellaneous, General bench, TB, Enterics/media and serology
Job responsibilities
1) To assist in the examination of a wide range of clinical samples from patients, in order to determine the laboratory diagnosis, and the appropriate treatment, of infection due to bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. Samples may additionally include other samples related to the potential for cause or spread of infection and samples for the purpose of screening patients for the carriage of significant organisms.
2) To carry out such bacteriological, serological or molecular diagnostic procedures as deemed applicable, working in conjunction with registered Biomedical Scientist (BMS) staff. This is a Laboratory support post with all activity being supervised by an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist.
3) To supervise, mentor, support and work with Senior Assistant Technical Officers (SATOs), Assistant Technical Officers (ATOs), and other support staff, to facilitate the smooth running of the service.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* To demonstrate proven equivalent experience to the level of an NVQ level 3 in Laboratory Science
* Considerable laboratory demonstrable experience plus NVQ level 3 or evidence of equivalent demonstrable experience
* GCSE to Grade C or above in English, Science, & Maths, or equivalent.
* Working towards a level 4 science qualification (BSc, HND, Foundation degree)
* NVQ4 in Clinical Laboratory Support (or equivalent)
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
* Proven Knowledge of Health & Safety issues
* Understanding of need for patient confidentiality
* Basic keyboard skills and computer literacy
* Proven Knowledge of all relevant Health & Safety legislation and its application to the Section
* Previous demonstrable experience in a laboratory environment.
APTITUDE & ABILITIES
* Accuracy and attention to detail
* Excellent communication skills, being able to effectively respond to staff and patients
* Ability to prioritise workloads
* Proven working knowledge of laboratory information management systems
* Proven working knowledge of Quality Management Systems including audit
