Senior Associate - Employment

Gowling WLG is hiring a Senior Associate to join our Employment team in Birmingham. The role involves advising employer clients ranging from major corporates and public sector bodies to tech start‑ups on all facets of employment law.


About the role

The Senior Associate will provide comprehensive legal support and will work closely with clients and the firm’s commercial and real estate teams.


Key responsibilities

* Advise clients on achieving strategic objectives within employment law constraints.
* Draft employment‑related documents such as service agreements, handbooks, secondment and consultancy agreements.
* Provide guidance on legislative changes and their implementation.
* Handle TUPE matters, from initial advice to ongoing support during consultations and information handling.
* Advise on redundancy, restructuring exercises and related commercial matters.
* Offer corporate support and transactional assistance to our commercial and real‑estate partners.
* Represent clients in employment tribunals, civil courts, discrimination litigation, and business protection disputes.
* Manage ER issues, including grievances, protected disclosures, family friendly policy advice, agency work, and working‑time matters.
* Advise on trade‑union issues and industrial relations disputes.
* Conduct workplace investigations.
* Address employment‑related data protection matters, including DSARs and employee privacy notices.
* Deliver client training and educational sessions.
* Drive business development and profile raising through public speaking, writing alerts/articles, and client engagement.


About you

* Qualified solicitor with 4–6 years post‑qualification experience in employment law.
* Demonstrated employment‑law expertise and understanding of key legislation.
* Experience building and maintaining client relationships and delivering client development events.
* Strong financial‑management awareness and proposal‑writing skills.
* Proven ability to support partners with marketing and profile‑raising initiatives.
* Excellent drafting, communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
* Organised, detail‑oriented, able to manage time effectively and work well under pressure.
* Adaptable to a broad range of situations and able to remain calm in high‑pressure environments.
