Locum Consultant in Gastroenterology

The closing date is 01 May 2026

We are seeking to appoint a Consultant Gastroenterologist as part of departmental expansion and continued development of specialised services, and to help support more efficient outpatient service delivery and reduce diagnostic backlogs.

This post is one of three new posts in the department and represents an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and growing department practising from a state‑of‑the‑art University hospital. The successful candidates will be expected to have or develop a sub‑speciality interest in Nutrition/IF, IBD, or Endoscopy to complement the existing team and to share their expertise in supporting and developing a forward‑thinking service.

Job responsibilities

1. Provide, in collaboration with colleagues, a comprehensive Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Endoscopy, and Nutrition service to patients in Coventry, Warwickshire and beyond. This includes ensuring all appropriate waiting lists and waiting times are adhered to; that services are provided in an effective and efficient manner; and that the principles of risk management and clinical governance are maintained at all times.
2. Have experience in a wide range of gastroenterological conditions and deliver the service. Expected to see 3 new patients and 8 follow‑up patients in each outpatient clinic, or 8 NPs if a virtual/2WW clinic.
3. Undertake unselected endoscopy lists booked to a standard template (currently 8–10 points per list due to COVID restrictions; will increase to 10–12 depending upon infection control/staffing).
4. Take responsibility for patients under your care.
5. Provide a consultation service and advisory service to other clinical colleagues in other specialties within the Trust and Primary Care.
6. Participate in the development of the gastroenterology service, treatment protocols and guidelines, and the greater knowledge in the management of gastroenterology conditions.
7. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialties and participate in regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities.
8. Participate in the gastroenterology on‑call rota (Consultant A 1:17; Consultant B 1:19) and the GI Bleed rota (1:19) to ensure appropriate emergency services are provided out‑of‑normal working hours.
9. Participate fully in the education and training of medical students, trainee doctors, nurses, and allied health‑care personnel as appropriate. Interest and experience in undergraduate teaching is essential.
10. Take responsibility for the professional supervision and development of trainee doctors within the specialty, including appraisal of F2s and SpRs, and the Certificates of Satisfaction in respect of F1s.
11. Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit, including development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice, and regular attendance at the Gastro QIPS meeting.
12. Ensure own practice is up to date; include responsibility for own Clinical Professional Development and participation in the Trust’s Performance and Annual Review system.
13. Share responsibility for data protection arising out of the use of computers.
14. Comply with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures.
