Position Overview

Vacancy at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust. Radiology Physics provides specialist clinical and non‑clinical scientific and technical services in diagnostic radiology physics and the ionising radiation protection of patients, staff and the general public to the Trust and to client health care organisations throughout the region.

Applications are invited for this full‑time post in Radiology Physics. Suitable candidates will have membership of the Voluntary Register of Clinical Technologists, or an appropriate HCPC registration.

The successful candidate will join a team of Clinical Scientists and Technicians led by a Consultant Clinical Scientist. The post holder would be involved in our diagnostic x‑ray quality assurance programme and support radiation protection across x‑ray, nuclear medicine and external beam radiotherapy. The role will also involve assisting with the personal dosimetry programme, environmental monitoring and radiation risk assessments.

A full UK driving licence is essential for this post. Please note that an international driving licence is not accepted.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.


Requirements

* Membership of the Voluntary Register of Clinical Technologists or an appropriate HCPC registration.
* Full UK driving licence.
* Provision of an immunisation and vaccination report.
* Maintain professional registration.


Responsibilities

* Primarily carry out quality assurance tests on x‑ray equipment, analyse the results and produce written reports.
* Assist with the personal dosimetry programme, environmental monitoring and radiation risk assessments.
* Support radiation protection across x‑ray, nuclear medicine and external beam radiotherapy.
* Carry out other tests and measurements in diagnostic x‑ray physics and radiation protection; prepare survey reports; support administration of the personal dosimetry programme; assist with booking equipment and environmental surveys; support staff training; and support the quality management system.
* Independently undertake equipment performance and radiation protection surveys, alone or with a colleague, following clearly defined operating procedures in line with the quality management system. This includes:
o Commissioning of new equipment.
o Routine quality control on existing installations.
o Investigation of faults on existing installations.
o Calibration of patient dose measuring equipment.
o Checking the radiation protection of the installation.
* Analyse the results of equipment performance measurements and write reports detailing the findings and recommending any action required.
* Maintain accurate records using Excel and Access.
* Calibrate x‑ray dose measuring equipment.
* Carry out the function testing of equipment used in the quality control of diagnostic x‑ray equipment and in ionising radiation protection.
* Under supervision, assess patient doses in diagnostic radiology.
* Under supervision, measure environmental radiation doses and activities.
* Support the training of all types of staff in the field of diagnostic radiological physics and ionising radiation protection, in small groups.
* Supervise less experienced staff members in undertaking equipment QA or radiation protection surveys as part of their training.
* Provide, under supervision, support to managers and staff throughout all organisations served in the areas of diagnostic radiology quality assurance and ionising radiation protection; and comment on proposed changes to related procedures.
* Assist with radiation protection surveys and risk assessments in all areas related to the diagnostic use of x‑rays and all areas of radiotherapy.
* Assist with the administration of the personal dosimetry programme.
* Assist with the booking of equipment QA tests and surveys.
* Take part in the evaluation of new diagnostic x‑ray and radiation measurement equipment.
* Collaborate with other members of the department group in the improvement and development of test protocols.
* Proactively share learning within the team and take part in meetings attended.
* Follow the appropriate key work instructions, risk assessments and systems of work and ensure direct supervision of those you are responsible for until they are competent.
* Keep up to date in relevant areas of diagnostic radiological physics and radiation protection.
