Consultant--4 PAs (Leadership & Governance Role): CDG Medical Director for Children & Young People (CDG3)

We are seeking an exceptional clinical leader to become the Medical Director for Children & Young People (CDG3) at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB). This is a new, strategic leadership post providing senior medical oversight across Paediatrics, Neonatal Services, and Community Child Health, supporting delivery of the Children & Young People Clinical Directorate Group (CDG3) priorities.


About The Role

This is a 4 PA Consultant leadership position, with a (small) additional responsibility payment. The successful candidate will provide professional medical leadership across services at Heartlands, Good Hope, Solihull and associated Community sites. The role is leadership focused, with the expectation to retain a clinical component within an agreed job plan. The post-holder will work closely with the Clinical Service Leads (CSLs), Directorate Manager, Matrons, and senior trust leadership to ensure safe, effective, and forward‑thinking services for children, young people, and families. The successful candidate will deputise for the Hospital Medical Director as required.


About You

Main duties, tasks & skills required: We are looking for a senior clinician who is an experienced Consultant in a relevant Paediatric or Neonatal specialty with a track record in clinical leadership, governance, and quality improvement. You should be able to demonstrate track record in building strong relationships across teams and professional groups. We naturally expect you to be committed to improving outcomes and experience for children and young people and to be an excellent communicator with the ability to influence, challenge, and inspire colleagues.

Contract & Location

4 PAs leadership role + (small) responsibility payment. You will hold a senior leadership remit for services at Heartlands, Good Hope, Solihull and Community sites (cross-site leadership required). Internal and external applicants welcome.


Key Responsibilities

* Provide senior medical leadership across Paediatrics, Neonates, and Community Child Health; ensure strong clinical governance and effective workforce oversight.
* Redesign Urgent & Emergency Care (UEC), including neonatal cot expansion.
* Strengthen community paediatric services.
* Integrate with key external partners.


Quality, Safety & Governance

Promote an open culture of learning from incidents and strengthening quality governance pathways across the CDG. Ensure clinical risk is appropriately monitored, escalated, and mitigated. Support compliance with statutory duties, professional standards, and best practice guidelines.


Workforce & Professional Leadership

Lead and support job planning, workforce optimisation, and consultant engagement across CDG3. Provide visible leadership to medical staff, working closely with the CSLs and wider multidisciplinary teams. Support recruitment, retention, and succession planning across all services.


Performance & Service Delivery

Enable delivery of safe and effective paediatric and neonatal services, including maintaining service resilience during surges or rota pressures. Work collaboratively with operational, nursing, and corporate colleagues to improve performance, productivity, and sustainability. Contribute to transformation programmes that enhance patient experience and outcomes.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Medical or Dental professional; GMC or GDC registered.
* Postgraduate qualifications or experience in education or governance.
* Evidence of CPD.
* Background in Paediatrics / Neonatology / Community Paediatrics.
