We are expanding our Infrastructure sector engineering team for UK projects in the nuclear fuels, decommissioning, water, and transport sectors.
Job Description
We are seeking candidates with significant experience as a Project Engineering Manager, particularly in Concept/FEED/Detailed Design phases on sites with major chemical process hazards and in highly regulated environments, including civil and structural schemes.
As a client-facing Project Engineering Manager, you will oversee the delivery of multi-disciplinary engineering design on major projects, ensuring they meet schedule, budget, safety, and quality standards throughout the project lifecycle.
The role is based at the Costain Manchester Office, with an expectation of working in the office up to three days per week. Our flexible working policy allows employees to discuss and agree on working arrangements based on individual and role requirements.
Travel to company, supplier, or client sites may be required for business purposes.
Responsibilities
1. Manage the delivery of multi-discipline engineering design, ensuring safety, sustainability, digital enablement, cost-effectiveness, compliance, and technical integrity.
2. Ensure effective utilization of engineering resources to maximize productivity and efficiency.
3. Coordinate engineering and design interfaces with project partners and supply chain.
4. Manage contractual communications, support meetings, risk assessments, cost reporting, and team coordination.
5. Report regularly to senior management on engineering performance.
6. Maintain a commercial focus, challenging scope creep and safeguarding project scope.
7. Implement and oversee engineering delivery processes, including design strategy, project scheduling, and safety management.
8. Identify and mitigate project risks early, escalating issues as needed.
9. Ensure compliance with governance standards and obtain necessary approvals.
10. Develop strong relationships through effective communication and team building.
11. Lead by example, uphold company values and safety standards.
12. Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental policies.
13. Collaborate with business development to develop and tender new opportunities.
14. Support mentoring and development of engineering team members.
15. Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes and capture lessons learned.
Essential Qualifications
* Extensive experience managing multi-discipline teams on major projects.
* Knowledge of civils, structures, and infrastructure, preferably within nuclear, chemical, or similar industries.
* Understanding of project delivery processes from inception to handover.
* Familiarity with UK standards and global best practices.
* Strong leadership in safety, quality, and environmental management.
* Knowledge of project controls including schedule, cost, risk, and change management.
* Collaborative, innovative, and adaptable approach.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
* Ability to work from the Manchester office at least 3 days a week and travel as required.
* Honours Degree or equivalent in an engineering discipline.
* Ability to achieve SC clearance.
Desirable Qualifications
* Experience with CE marking requirements.
* Knowledge of energy transition technologies such as green/blue hydrogen, CCUS, and emissions reduction.
* Strong engineering and business system skills.
* Chartered Engineer status and membership of a professional institution.
* PMI accreditation or similar.
