Introduction
The Head of Engineering will lead both Design Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering functions, driving innovation, process improvements, and operational efficiency across the business. A key responsibility will be the ownership of the Opportunities for Improvement (OfI) scheme, ensuring employee ideas are harnessed to deliver measurable improvements. The role is central to embedding lean manufacturing practices, enhancing productivity across operations and the machine shop, and building long-term capability through structured career development, internships, and talent programmes.
Key Responsibilities
• Leadership of Engineering Functions
o Manage and develop both Design and Manufacturing Engineering teams, ensuring alignment with business objectives and technical excellence.
o Foster a collaborative culture across engineering disciplines to improve communication, innovation, and problem-solving.
• Process Improvement & Lean Delivery
o Lead the business-wide OfI (Opportunities for Improvement) scheme, ensuring employee-driven ideas are captured, evaluated, and implemented.
o Champion lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement across engineering, operations, and the machine shop.
o Drive efficiency gains through process optimisation, standardisation, and adoption of best practices.
• Project & Operational Management
o Oversee delivery of engineering projects, ensuring technical standards, cost efficiency, and deadlines are met.
o Support operations in solving production challenges, reducing waste, and increasing throughput.
o Ensure regulatory and industry compliance is upheld across design and manufacturing activities.
• Talent & Capability Development
o Lead career growth and succession planning within engineering teams.
o Develop and manage internships, graduate schemes, T-Levels, and work experience programmes, building a sustainable talent pipeline.
o Mentor engineers at all levels, ensuring skills development and capability growth across the business.
• Stakeholder Engagement & Communication
o Act as the key link between engineering, operations, commercial teams, and senior leadership.
o Communicate progress, challenges, and solutions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Leadership & Site Engagement
Act as a core member of the site leadership team, contributing to strategic decision-making and business performance.
Lead KPI reporting and provide input into monthly Management Business Reviews, ensuring transparency on engineering and operational performance.
Represent engineering in town hall presentations, communicating progress, achievements, and updates to the wider site.
Qualifications, Skills and Attributes
Core Requirements
• Strong technical background in engineering (design and/or manufacturing, ideally within Aerospace or precision engineering).
• Proven track record in lean manufacturing, process improvement, and efficiency initiatives.
• Strong leadership and people management skills with a focus on developing future talent and capability.
• Excellent communication, influencing, and collaboration skills across diverse teams.
• Commercial awareness with the ability to balance innovation, cost, quality, and delivery.
• Strategic thinker with hands-on problem-solving ability.
