Are you organised, approachable and committed to making things run smoothly? Do you want to play a key role in keeping a community hub reliable, safe and welcoming?
We're looking for a Youth & Community Operations Assistant to join our small, dedicated team at The Lighthouse Project – a brand-new £4.4m youth and community hub in the heart of Byker. This is a practical, purposeful role where you'll combine customer-facing support with strong organisational skills: helping staff, volunteers and visitors feel at home while making sure the hub runs reliably day to day.
The role is part-time, with a guaranteed minimum of 16 hours per week. Evening and weekend shifts will form part of your working pattern and there's scope for more hours as the centre grows. This is a role with real room to evolve; starting steady but with genuine opportunities to develop as our community hub expands.
Key Responsibilities
As a Youth & Community Operations Assistant, you will:
* Support the day-to-day running of the hub, ensuring smooth operations and a welcoming environment.
* Provide on-site support so staff, volunteers and visitors feel safe, informed and supported.
* Respond to enquiries (in person, phone, email) with professionalism and empathy.
* Help coordinate staff and volunteer rotas to keep programmes running smoothly.
* Maintain records, schedules and programme data to support reporting and decision-making.
* Support recruitment, onboarding and training of staff and volunteers.
* Carry out routine health and safety checks, keeping compliance documentation up to date.
* Act as a keyholder with responsibility for opening and locking the hub.
* Provide administrative support to the Chief Executive and Trustees (agendas, papers, minutes).
* Contribute to hub events and partner activities through planning, logistics and follow-up.
* Support safeguarding protocols and escalate concerns appropriately.
What We're Looking For
Essential
* Strong organisational and administrative skills with attention to detail.
* Ability to work flexibly, adapt to changing priorities and solve problems proactively.
* Excellent interpersonal skills, able to engage and support a wide range of people.
* Commitment to inclusivity and equity, working effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
* Confident using digital tools (email, spreadsheets, databases, communication platforms).
Desirable
* Experience in youth or community work with awareness of local dynamics.
* Knowledge of safeguarding procedures (training / qualification desirable).
* Experience supporting trustee boards, compliance or operational processes.
* Understanding of health and safety or building management (training such as First Aid or H&S desirable).
* Customer service or stakeholder-facing experience.
What We Offer
* Supportive coaching and development from the Hub Manager.
* Ongoing training opportunities.
* A brand-new, fully resourced facility to empower your work.
* A chance to shape a new community project and make a visible difference locally.
* Future progression opportunities as the project grows.
* A fun, purpose-driven environment with a passionate, tight-knit team (and plenty of tea and coffee).
If you're excited about helping us build a youth and community hub that shines brightly for Byker, we'd love to hear from you.
