Qualified Social Worker
Location: Greater Manchester
Pay rate: £40 per hour
We are looking for experienced and passionate Qualified Social Workers to join a dedicated Emergency Duty Team (EDT) in the North West. You must have Approved Mental Health Practitioner experience. In this role, you will provide a responsive, emergency social work service outside of office hours across the local authority. The team offers social work assistance on an emergency basis to vulnerable people, including families at risk, people with disabilities, and those with acute mental health issues (including acting as an Approved Mental Health Practitioner).
You will deliver the Council’s statutory emergency duty response outside of office hours, weekends, and bank holidays in complex situations. The role involves responding to adults needing mental health assessments, safeguarding, and social care emergency interventions.
The role holder will ensure the safe delivery of social care, uphold statutory responsibilities, and provide high-quality services. Managing safeguarding risks effectively within a multi-agency environment, you will work holistically and person-centred, keeping customers and families central to the process.
As an AMHP, you will have the authority to apply for detention under the Mental Health Act and to approve Community Treatment Orders and Guardianship requests. If trained as a Best Interest Assessor (BIA), you can recommend deprivation of liberty under the Mental Capacity Act.
Ideal candidates will have:
* Professional Social Work qualification and registration with Social Work England
* Qualified AMHP
* Post-qualification experience, especially with complex cases
* Willingness to undergo an enhanced disclosure check
* Availability to work out of hours, including weekends and bank holidays, to provide a 24/7 service
In this role, you will:
* Conduct assessments and share outcomes appropriately in an out-of-hours emergency setting
* Assess and, when suitable, arrange hospital admissions or refer to less restrictive alternatives, liaising with crisis and medical teams
* Ensure effective safeguarding interventions, managing investigations, protection planning, and documentation
* Apply the Mental Capacity Act, supporting vulnerable individuals, and seeking least restrictive options for admission
* Engage informal supports, resolve conflicts, and coordinate statutory, voluntary, and independent services as needed
* Prepare professional documentation in line with policies and deadlines
