Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy Nurse

We are currently seeking highly motivated Nurses to join our nurse‑led unit as a SACT Band 6 nurse at Cathedral Day Unit at Kent & Canterbury Hospital.
Whilst this is a challenging role and requires someone who is flexible and adaptable to changing environments it is very rewarding, and a rare opportunity that offers great career progression.
No one day is the same and draws on and enables the post‑holder to use a variety of skills and expertise. You must like working with people and want to support the unit manager in making a real difference to our patients and families' lives as well as make a positive contribution to the team and our service, while supporting the nursing team as they adapt to the changes within Chemotherapy.
PLEASE NOTE - WE CANNOT OFFER VISA SPONSORSHIP FOR THIS ROLE AS THIS IS A PART‑TIME VACANCY AND WILL NOT MEET THE SALARY THRESHOLD. If you hold a Graduate/Post Study work visa, you will only be able to work this role fixed term until the expiry date of your visa.

Job responsibilities
The Band 6 Nurse on a Systemic Anti‑Cancer Therapy (SACT) unit provides clinical leadership and specialist nursing care to patients receiving cancer treatments. They are responsible for the safe assessment, administration, and monitoring of SACT and supportive therapies, ensuring compliance with national and local protocols.
Key responsibilities include:
Clinical assessment of patients prior to treatment, including review of blood results and toxicity assessments
Safe administration of SACT and supportive treatments, including blood products
Management of central venous access devices (PICC/PORT), cannulation, venepuncture, and pump disconnections
Early recognition and management of oncological emergencies and acutely unwell patients
Supervision, support, and mentorship of junior staff and students
Coordination of patient flow, chair capacity, and workload management
Ensuring accurate documentation and adherence to governance, safety, and chemotherapy policies
Patient education regarding treatment, side effects, and when to seek urgent care
Participation in audits, incident reviews, and service improvement initiatives
The role combines advanced clinical skills with leadership, decision‑making, and responsibility for maintaining high standards of patient safety and care delivery within the SACT service.
Person Specification
Qualifications and training
* Degree trained registered nurse
* 2 years post registration experience in a hospital setting, 1 year of experience as a band 5 in a haematology‑oncology setting
* SACT competent
* In‑house SACT education programme or equivalent
* SACT accredited course
* Continuous quality improvement
* Teaching and Assessing
* Has commenced or completed SACT passport
* Previous Band 6 experience
Skills and Experience
* Cannulation and venepuncture
* IV drug administration
* CVAD accessing
* Chemotherapy competence/SACT
* 24 hr telephone triage
* Experience of working within a nurse‑led service/competency in nurse‑led clinics
* Communication, facilitating, negotiation and venesection skills
* Ultrasound‑guided cannulation
* PICC placement
Governance
* An understanding of local and national initiatives within cancer, radiotherapy and other treatments
* Working knowledge of COSHH
* Current understanding of key issues facing the NHS both locally and nationally
