Responsible for: The line management of boarding staff within a particular House, or across Houses as the rota dictates

Job purpose: As a resident Senior Houseparent, you will be a strong presence in boarding, helping to lead the supervision and guidance of staff for the safety and welfare of all boarding students. You will work efficiently your house, providing for the safety, good discipline and pastoral well-being of all boarding pupils, successfully enabling an atmosphere which is conducive to learning and growth.

Main areas of responsibility:
• To be resident within the House at all times during term time (excluding time off duty) and to be responsible for the general welfare and personal development of all the boarders in
your house, with expert knowledge and application of the National Minimum Standards for Boarding.

• To rigorously ensure your house complies with regulations outlined in the National Minimum Standards, Independent Schools Regulations and other relevant legislation.

• To create a ‘home away from home’ experience for all boarders.

• To manage the relevant staff, ensuring excellent academic and pastoral care for the boarders.

• To promote excellent working relationships with parents and guardians and to respond to their concerns efficiently and effectively.

• To be able to support any situation that may arise within your house, at any timeevents (on or off site) and through giving tours for prospective parents.

• To be a positive member of the wider School Community, always promoting the highest professional standards.

Welfare of Boarders
• Establishing a boarding house which supports the aims and ethos of the School.

• Provide an environment in which all boarders will flourish spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually.

• Support the creation of vibrant and innovative programmes of boarding and weekend activities, playing a central role in the provision of these activities.

• Ensure a boarding environment in which all pupils are given the sound foundation for a healthy lifestyle.

Administration
• Maintain an up-to-date list of pupils’ names, home addresses, medical needs and the contact telephone numbers of parents and guardians.

• Guarantee high quality and sensitive communication between parents and all boarding staff.

• Be aware of the procedures for leave and enforce them.

Care of the Boarding Area
• Liaise with the maintenance team regarding any necessary repairs.

• Ensure pupils keep their study bedrooms and the leisure areas tidy.

• General supervision of the facilities in the boarding house (e.g. kitchen area, common areas).

• To maintain an accurate inventory of all House equipment and resources.

Pastoral Care and Welfare

• Write ‘boarding reports’ as part of the School’s reporting system.

• Keep in touch with parents and guardians; have a knowledge of pupils’ home backgrounds.

• Securely store medication as required.

Behaviour

• Enforce school policies always related to good disciple.

• Ensure pupils adhere to school policy on bedtimes and mealtimes.

Security and H&S
• Check the roll each evening and, if necessary, later for those away on an authorised trip.

• Be familiar with fire alarm procedures, running at least one practice per term and logging details.

• Ensure visitors are introduced to you and they are only on site at appropriate times and in appropriate places, being supervised at all times.

• Alongside these key aspects will be the health, safety and well-being of all the boarders. An up-to-date knowledge of the National Minimum Standards is essential as is the ability to
keep well-ordered and meticulous records. The Boarding Staff Handbook provides greater detail on all these duties.

The Role

This is a full time role.

The Hammond

The Hammond is the North West’s leading provider of performing arts education and the UK’s oldest vocational dance school. Here at The Hammond, we are passionate about providing the best possible vocational training in dance, drama, acting and music, alongside an enriching academic curriculum. Our boarding pupils live offsite in Chester town centre, a short 10 minute journey from the main school site.

Safeguarding

The successful candidate will be subject to employment checks, including DBS and reference checks and will be provided with safeguarding training.
