The Antenatal & Newborn Screening Failsafe Officer (postholder) will support the Antenatal & Newborn Screening coordinator and Screening Midwife in ensuring safe and quality assured NHS antenatal and newborn screening programmes within the trust are met.

The ANNB screening service is a woman and family focussed service with a strong ethos for quality improvement. It is delivered by a team which is motivated and works well across all disciplines and all clinical areas. The ANNB screening team have a commitment to address areas falling short of standards, maintain patient safety and drive programme quality. The screening failsafe officer would be a valuable member of that team and we would expect the same commitment.

Antenatal and newborn screening programmes aim to detect conditions that are present in either the mother or baby that might have an adverse effect on the health of either. Pregnant women and newborn babies are usually offered screening tests as an integrated and linked part of their care. Optimal screening programmes require effective team working across a number of professional groups and departments to offer safe, personal and effective care.


Main duties of the job

1. Provide administrative support to the ANNB Screening Co-ordinator/midwife including photocopying, filing, scanning and other routine office tasks.
2. Liaise closely with the ANNB Screening Co-ordinator, ward, clinic and community midwives, paediatricians and Newborn Hearing Screening teams to ensure the smooth running of the services.
3. Answer telephone enquiries, refer issues to other members of the business group as appropriate and act as the main point of contact in relation to issues/updates for the Failsafe system.
4. Liaise as appropriate with external service providers.
5. Provide data to the Screening Co-ordinator for the quarterly KPI’s and annual report.
6. Provide a daily analysis of breaches of Failsafe Systems and to action them appropriately and alert Screening Co-ordinator or Screening midwife when users of the service are adversely affected.
7. Liaise with other external services to improve antenatal and new-born screening service provision for women and their families. As well as confirming screening has been undertaken or vaccines given timely.
8. Understand the impact of screening outcomes on mothers, their infants and other family members, and the role that maternity services can play in providing support.
9. Develop and maintain a working knowledge of antenatal and new-born screening policies and guidance
10. To act as the main point of contact in relation to issues / updates for the Northgate system.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will actively participate in the Clinical Governance process and Management of Risk. It is a standard element of the role and responsibility of all staff of the Trust that they fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards. Assist in the process of investigating incidents and participation in route cause analysis and sudden untoward incidents Participate in educating and supporting staff in the governance process.
