Main duties of the job
The postholder on this busy inpatient assessment ward will offer specific OT assessments and interventions to older people with both functional and organic mental health conditions. These will be offered on an individual basis in the ward and when appropriate, in community settings or the service user's home. The postholder will also contribute to the ward-based therapeutic group programme. The postholder will use the Model of Human Occupation and other relevant OT models, as well as the recovery framework, trauma-informed approach and sensory modulation awareness to inform their practice.

The post holder will work closely with the ward multi-disciplinary team and will be professionally supervised by the Band 7 Lead OT.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

* Assessment of an individuals occupational performance and offering recommendations and interventions to optimise their potential to live meaningful and satisfying lives, heeding their views and values. This includes balancing rights and risks and understanding legal frameworks of practice.
* Demonstrating awareness of the impact of mental health and physical conditions on occupational performance and being able to offer advice on condition management or adaptations to enhance safe performance.
* Adhering to professional practice guidelines and codes of conduct.
* Provision of timely and accurate documentation communicating outcomes of assessments and recommendations to support recovery.
* Liaising with team colleagues and external agencies to advocate for service users needs and to promote appropriate levels of support.
* Delivering a timely and effective OT service using evidence-based practice.
* Undertaking continuous professional development in order to remain up-to-date and competent in practice.
* Participating in service developments such as QI projects or audits.
* Contributing to the development of others (eg: OT/ nursing students, support workers and volunteers).
* To act in a professional and courteous manner, representing the occupational therapy profession in a positive light as a member of the multi-disciplinary team.

Education And Qualifications
Essential criteria
* Degree / Diploma in Occupational Therapy
* Current HCPC Registration
Desirable criteria
* Relevant postgraduate education
* Practice placement educators course
Previous experience
Essential criteria
* Work in a mental health setting
* Work with older adults
* Use of standardised OT assessments
* MDT working
* Experience of working in a multi-cultural environment
* Equipment provision and environmental adaptations
* Experience of facilitating group work.
Desirable criteria
* Experience of people living with severe/enduring mental health issues
* Experience of people living with dementia
* ‘Lived experience’ of either using mental health services or supporting someone who uses services.
