Hours: 12.5 hours per week per position, school holidays only- 2:1 support Area: Heaton, Newcastle Upon Tyne Rate: £15.00 per hour We are currently recruiting for 2 experienced personal assistants for a loving young boy with Autism, Global Development Delay, and a Learning Disability. Our client always requires full supervision as they have no awareness of danger. He currently resides with his mum and sister and they have a cat so you must be an animal lover. This role would suit individuals that have experience working with children with autism either in an educational setting or lived experience with relevant qualifications. Reggie enjoys a variety of sensory stimulating activities including trampolining, soft play, swimming and trips to the local parks. He would like to visit and explore new venues with enclosed spaces like the Alan Shearer Centre or The Tim Lamb Centre to widen his experiences within the community. He uses a specialist wheelchair when out in the community for his own safety. Routine and continuity are very important to Reggie as he can dysregulate if sudden changes occur. He cannot tell you directly what is wrong, but will communicate using minimal language or repeat language, hand gestures and leading to show and tell you his needs. Reggie can have meltdowns, so coping strategies to manage these must be demonstrated and implemented to ensure his safety. He is a strong child, so a good level of fitness is required to support him safely and being able to run at a fast pace would be required in case of flee attempts. At home Reggie enjoys playing with his sensory toys or watching his favourite programmes which change every week depending on his interests or latest obsession. Reggie has a limited diet and will only eat certain foods, but mum would guide you on this and she manages all medications. Reggie will need assistance with dressing especially when out and will require prompts to wear his coat. The main tasks within this role will include supporting Reggie to access the local community, accompanying and supporting him to engage in his chosen activities, and personal care including nappy changing. We are preferably looking for a car driver with a full clean UK driving licence for this role, however, using public transport and an ability to navigate the transport systems would benefit in teaching Reggie how to access and use public transport as part of his on-going development in social skills.
