Main duties of the job
In order to support the Trust’s Major Trauma Centre in the Yorkshire and Humber region, we are looking to appoint an Orthopaedic Major Trauma Consultant. This permanent post will maintain our established team of Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultants, who lead the care of patients following major trauma at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
Job responsibilities
This is a 10 PA substantive post for a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic surgeon, with specialist interests in Major Trauma. The post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Major Trauma team (Mr Kanakaris, Professor Giannoudis, Mr Harwood, Mr Foster, Mr Taylor, Mr Kapoor, Mr Bakhshayesh, Ms Lowery, Mr Vollans and Ms Tunstall). The job responsibilities include:
* Delivering care to patients with major trauma injuries at the Leeds General Infirmary Outpatient clinics
* Supervising patients
* Providing care of in‑patients on a 1‑to‑10 on‑call rota
* Contributing to the role of Leeds as a training centre for national trainees in trauma and orthopaedic surgery
* Providing support and clinical expertise to teams at referring centres
* Linking with consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within Leeds Teaching Hospitals and across the Major Trauma Network
* Working with colleagues in major trauma to deliver acute on‑call cover (currently 1‑to‑10), including out‑of‑hours cover and acute ward rounds during normal working hours
* Contributing to research, teaching and new developments within the Major Trauma Service
* Facilitating and contributing to the current clinical research programmes ongoing in the department
The role offers an outstanding opportunity to play a key role in developing and delivering major trauma services in the region and improving outcomes for our patients. The successful applicant will work at the centre of a regional network that covers nearly three million people (adults and children) in our Major Trauma Centre, including dedicated major trauma ward, theatres and critical care facilities.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
* Qualified in S (or equivalent) in Trauma & Orthopaedics
* Completed higher specialist training (or equivalent) in Trauma & Orthopaedics
* Included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview (if currently within a training programme in the UK)
* High level of clinical experience in Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery, with established skills in managing major trauma
* Excellent communication and teamwork skills, and a strong commitment to teaching and service development
* Proven track record in undergraduate and postgraduate education and research

INTERVIEWS WILL BE HELD: 14 July 2026.
If shortlisted, you will be required to give a 10‑minute presentation on “Regional Major Trauma Networks – challenges and opportunities in the current era of specialist services of the NHS.”
