We’re seeking an ambitious Strategic Director for Communities and Environment to actively improve the health and well-being of residents through strategic leadership and creative problem-solving. You’ll need to identify what’s working and what isn’t within several services, including Communities and Health Partnership; Environmental Health; Health and Safety; Leisure; Inclusion and Diversity; Waste; Parks and Open Spaces; Street Cleansing; Building Control.
You’ll also need to collaborate closely with other directorates in the Council and external partners on large-scale projects, such as Everyone Active, the Council’s leisure partnership with locations in Basildon, Wickford and Pitsea. You’ll need to understand how to work closely with communities on the ground to help us deliver in several key areas, including community spaces, community programmes, NHS services and green spaces (such as the 26-mile area along the Thames estuary).
While we’re open-minded to the right candidate’s background, you’ll need to understand the local government, central government, and public sector landscape. With a third of the job being team management and another third being member management, we’re looking for someone who can manage complex relationships and scrutiny – and who has a track record of setting ambition and inspiring teams to deliver for local communities.
