Are you practical, organised, and passionate about supporting others to develop real-world skills? We’re looking for a Laundry & Sewing Industry Instructor to lead a dynamic workshop space that’s about more than just laundry, it’s about rehabilitation, purpose, and preparation for employment. About the Workshop This is a multi-function area that combines traditional prison laundry facilities with creative textile projects. Prisoners support local causes by making tote bags from recycled denim for the local hospice and work in partnership with a local business to apply heat-transfer logos to workwear. Repairs to prison clothing are also part of the day-to-day activity. It’s a busy, purposeful space that can accommodate up to 35 individuals at a time. What You’ll Do You’ll take the lead on managing the day-to-day operations of a laundry and sewing workshop. That includes: Supervising and motivating a team of prisoners, promoting structure, safety, and productivity. Setting clear work schedules and targets, ensuring all laundry and textile tasks are completed to a high standard. Supporting the development of employability skills through the Employability Passport in collaboration with Work & Skills Coaches. Promoting restorative practices that encourage accountability, personal growth, and positive relationships. Managing stock levels, tools, and materials, with strict adherence to prison security and safety protocols. Contributing to prisoner reports and rehabilitation plans as part of a joined-up approach with other prison departments. What We’re Looking For We’d love to hear from you if you have: Experience in laundry, textiles, or a similar practical industry ideally in a supervisory or training role. The ability to manage people and foster a positive working environment. Strong organisational skills and a focus on health and safety. An understanding of, or willingness to learn, restorative practices. A collaborative approach to working with custodial staff and other internal teams. Experience working in a custodial or secure environment is helpful but not essential—we’ll support the right person to adapt. This is more than a job it’s a chance to make a meaningful impact. You’ll be helping people build confidence, gain skills, and prepare for a better future beyond the prison gate.
