Senior Technical Business Analyst (SFIA L5) Contract: 12 months (full-time, 40 hrs/week) Rate: £650 per day (Umbrella) Location: Hybrid – Leeds / Newcastle / Birmingham (approx. 60% onsite). Must be commutable to site within ~90 minutes. ROLE PURPOSE: The client is seeking a Senior Technical Business Analyst with recent, hands-on experience working directly with software delivery teams to help shape and deliver shared technical capabilities and enablers (platform, DevOps, resilience, security etc.) across a large digital environment. This is a highly technical BA role (SFIA Level 5 – Ensure & Advise). You will work alongside engineers, architects, DevOps and platform teams to turn loosely defined technical epics into clear, delivery-ready features and user stories. This is not a “task taking” role – you will bring structure to ambiguity, challenge constructively, and help shape technical solutions. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Technical Analysis & Delivery Analyse complex technical and business processes across software engineering, DevOps, security, resilience and platform domains Take ownership of unclear epics/backlog items and refine them into delivery-ready features and user stories Define scope, assumptions, constraints, risks and dependencies across multiple technical initiatives Ensure stories meet Definition of Ready and provide ongoing clarification during build and test Collaboration with Engineering Teams (Essential): Work day-to-day with software engineers, DevOps engineers, architects and testers Facilitate technical design discussions and ensure shared understanding of requirements and proposed solutions Translate technical concepts so they are understood by both technical and non-technical stakeholders Challenge implementation approaches where needed, based on user, operational and technical outcomes Discovery / Proof of Concept / Early Phase: Support discovery and PoC activities, including shaping hypotheses, defining success measures, and identifying technical risks and assumptions Contribute to value cases, benefits mapping, and outcome-based metrics Stakeholder Engagement: Engage confidently with Product Managers, senior engineers, architects, Delivery Managers and business stakeholders Balance stakeholder needs with technical feasibility and delivery constraints Operate effectively across multiple initiatives, managing frequent context switching ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE: Applications that do not clearly evidence the below will not progress. Recent Technical BA Experience (last 2–3 years) Recent experience working directly with software development teams Clear examples of: technical user stories written outcomes delivered (not just responsibilities) systems/platforms worked on Technical Awareness & Breadth (must be explicit on CV) You do not need to be an engineer, but you must understand technical concepts and vocabulary. Experience should include exposure to some of: Cloud platforms (AWS / Azure) CI/CD pipelines (GitLab / Jenkins) Containers & orchestration (Docker / Kubernetes) – must understand what a “container” is APIs and service-based architectures DevOps ways of working Non-functional requirements (security, resilience, recoverability, testability) Agile & Lean Delivery Strong Agile mindset with experience working in Scrum / Kanban teams Lean, outcome-focused approach to requirements and scope Comfortable working with ambiguity and evolving technical landscapes Breadth of Experience Demonstrated experience across multiple systems, teams and/or technical domains Candidates focused narrowly on ERP, single-system implementations, or systems integration only will not be considered DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE: Previous experience within UK Government or large, complex enterprises Experience shaping backlogs for newly formed engineering teams Exposure to security, platform or shared services environments NOT SUITABLE IF YOUR BACKGROUND IS PRIMARILY ERP-only or systems integration-focused Lacking hands-on collaboration with software engineers Light on technical detail or tooling Unclear recent activity (e.g., unexplained career gaps) If you are interested, please apply now, or call 01772 208962
