NHS Dumfries and Galloway is expanding its Infectious Diseases service and invites applications from enthusiastic and forward‑thinking Consultants in Infectious Diseases to join a growing, multidisciplinary team at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary (DGRI).
This is a rare opportunity to help shape a modern, integrated Infectious Diseases service, delivering holistic care "from the front door" in a supportive rural teaching hospital, while enjoying a high quality of life in one of Scotland's most scenic regions.
About the Role
Consultant posts are available to join an established Infectious Diseases team, working closely with Microbiology, Acute Medicine, OPAT, BBV and Public Health colleagues.
The service delivers care across outpatient, community and inpatient settings, with a strong emphasis on innovation, flexibility and service development. Successful candidates may tailor their role to include interests in Microbiology, Acute Medicine or General Medicine, with opportunities to participate in one or more on‑call rotas by agreement.
Key Responsibilities
1. Provide consultant‑level care for patients with infectious diseases across inpatient, outpatient and community settings
2. Deliver outpatient services including:
3. Blood‑borne viruses (HIV, HBV, HCV)
4. Tuberculosis (including community‑based outreach clinics)
5. Lyme disease, PUO and general infectious diseases
6. OPAT and COPAT services
7. Support inpatient care for infectious diseases and complex infection cases
8. Provide in‑reach Infectious Diseases advice to medical and surgical specialties
9. Participate in OPAT, TB and BBV service leadership, depending on expertise
10. Contribute to antimicrobial stewardship, infection control and clinical governance
11. Support innovation in service redesign, including development of combined ID/Microbiology working
12. Participate in Microbiology and/or Acute Medicine on‑call rotas (optional, by agreement)
13. Contribute to teaching, supervision and CPD across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
What We're Looking For
Essential
14. Primary medical qualification
15. Full GMC registration with Specialist Registration
16. Appropriate Royal College membership
17. Substantial experience and commitment to Infectious Diseases
18. Ability to provide independent expert clinical care
19. Strong communication and multidisciplinary team‑working skills
Desirable
20. Interest or experience in Microbiology, Acute Medicine or General Medicine
21. Leadership or service development experience
22. Teaching, audit or research experience
23. Flexible and innovative approach to service delivery
