Main Purpose of Job To undertake routine and complex analysis of lipids and lipid containing materials, cannabis and cannabis products, including GLP, GCP and GMP samples, for external clients from a worldwide customer base, carry out method development and validation for commercial application as required, and deal with client queries. Main Duties of Postholder Perform routine and complex analysis of lipids, lipid containing materials and other natural products using GC, GC-MS, HPLC, LC-MS, TLC, IR, UV and a range of wet chemistry techniques, collate and interpret data, and produce analytical reports. Ensure safety of yourself and others in laboratory, by following JHI Health and Safety policies and procedures and reporting any issues to line manager. Prepare, review and update health and safety documentation as required. Communicate with clients re jobs that are underway and keep track of deadlines. Carry out method development, method verification/validation, as required, including resourcing consumables and preparation of protocols and reports Work to GMP, GCP, GLP, ISO9001 requirements, reporting any non-conformances to line manager. Log and perform internal non-conformance, deviation and OOS investigations, and external complaint/query investigations, and define root cause, as required, in order to implement effective corrective and preventive action. Participate in internal and external audits, and regulatory inspections. Prepare laboratory reagents and standards. Log and store samples appropriately and dispose of samples in accordance with the James Hutton Institute policies. Carry out instrument calibration and maintenance and trouble shoot problems on instruments, and complete associated documentation. Review, update and create quality system documentation as required: SOPs, Analytical Test Methods, Protocols, Reports etc. Order resources/consumables/equipment as required Authorise other staff data and reports for external clients Train and mentor junior members of staff in analytical methods and equipment operation Any other duties as required Person Specification Education/Experience/Skills Essential HNC/HND/BSc. in Chemistry or closely related subject Substantial understanding of analytical chemistry with experience of organic/lipid analysis using GC-FID, HPLC, GC-MS, TLC and UV-Vis Spectroscopy Practical experience of Chromatography software applications, e.g ChemStation, Chromeleon, Mass Hunter Previous experience of working in an analytical laboratory Experience of working in an accredited laboratory (GxP, ISO) and Quality Management System documentation Excellent understanding of Microsoft Excel and Word Good verbal and written communication skills Ability to work as a self starting individual and as part of a team Be well organised, efficient and able to work to tight deadlines Desirable Experience of working with a large number of commercial clients Experience of carrying out method verification/validation, and preparation of protocols and reports Good understanding of Microsoft access Flexibility in approach to learning other disciplines Ability to train other staff in analytical techniques to a high level of capability Experience of participation in external audits/inspections Other Skills Flexible approach to fit in with demands of the business Ability to cope with demanding work schedules Additional notes/Requirements Please note location of the laboratory is up 1 flight of stairs with no lift access.
