Job Description
The Environment Agency is fully committed to inclusivity and equal opportunities, offering flexible work arrangements for all our vacancies. Join us in a diverse environment where every voice is heard and valued.
Do you want to effectively regulate the energy sectors to create a better future for all?
The UK’s strategy to deliver Net Zero is driving a transformation in the energy sectors, which are responsible for 24% of UK greenhouse‑gas emissions. They must fully decarbonise by 2050 while doubling electricity production. Energy security pressures add urgency to transitioning to sustainable, domestic sources of power.
Through effective regulation we must protect people and the environment from emissions and mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
We’re recruiting a fixed‑term role, up to 2 years, for someone with experience in or regulation of energy sectors, including combustion plants, waste incineration and refineries.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide expert support and technical leadership through advice, guidance, and training.
* Develop strategy for energy sectors and produce tools to regulate, support development and deliver environmental outcomes.
* Commission and manage external research projects as required.
* Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders such as Defra, DESNZ, internal operations teams, trade associations and other key industry players.
* Respond to incidents, making yourself available to provide incident or business‑continuity support during emergencies.
Team Overview
The Energy & COMAH team is part of the Energy and Manufacturing Industries Regulation of Environment & Business (E&B) Directorate. We lead on setting standards for our sectors, providing strategic direction, tools, guidance and training to support new regulatory duties and promote environmental best practice.
Experience / Skills Required
* Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, actively encouraging consideration of diversity issues.
* Relevant technical and regulatory knowledge, with experience of regulating energy sector processes, including control measures for air emissions.
* Ability to build and maintain good relationships with colleagues, operators, partner regulators, government, trade bodies and academia.
* Cooperative teamwork to achieve common goals.
