Austin Design Works is an architecture and landscape design studio based in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire specialising in private residential, heritage and commercial projects in rural locations across the UK. Founded in 2016 by siblings Rachael Emous-Austin and Matthew Austin, the company designs low carbon buildings, environmentally sensitive landscapes and gardens, with genuine sustainability at their heart.
A certified B Corporation, Austin Design Works collaborates with clients and like-minded suppliers, using traditional construction methods, artisanship and natural materials in locations where planning requirements are often complex and challenging. This is a great opportunity to work on a range of exciting domestic, hospitality and conservation projects in in a busy, ethical and creative practice. Guide salary c.34-38k subject to experience, negotiable. Maternity cover, not permanent.
Ideal Candidate: The applicant must possess a detailed knowledge of planning and building regs. We are looking for someone with demonstrable experience throughout RIBA stages 1-3 and experience of listed / conservation and low-energy projects – a working knowledge of passivhaus is desirable but not essential. Someone who drives and can work autonomously. This is a hybrid, full time position but part-time could be considered for the right candidate. The ability to be able to pick up and run both some existing projects in stages 1-3 as well as taking on new work and new clients is crucial to this role. Experience with Vectorworks preferred. We are looking for a team player who's equally happy leading projects remotely.
Key skills/responsibilities:
Be responsible for ensuring projects are delivered on time and within agreed budget.
Mitigate and manage any scope creep by undertaking regular project reviews to assess progress against time and budget. Effectively manage any delays or budget over-runs by highlighting them and making the necessary amendments ensuring both the client and the director are in agreement.
Actively seeking out new opportunities, attending new enquiry site visits and preparing fee proposals
Experienced in Adobe suite, Microsoft Office and Sketchup
2-3 years Post Part 3
Clear and effective working through all RIBA work stages 0-3
Arranging site visits, preparing measured surveys, site reports and site minutes
Organising and preparing presentation material including 2D sketching and model-making
Drafting of concept designs and detailed designs in 2D and 3D CAD and by hand
Drafting and amending technical designs and production information in CAD and by hand
Leading the integration of technical information and statutory requirements into design and production drawings
Leading in the preparation and collation of drawings and documents for planning and building control approval, tender and construction purposes
Collating the information required and organising and preparing RIBA stage reports
Researching project briefs, materials and construction products
Contributing effectively and professionally at both internal and external meetings
