Job Duties

This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12 month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.
Performs the repair and maintenance of all grounds and buildings on the inside of Dillwyn Correctional Center. Works closely with others, alone, and around offenders. Works around machines with moving parts and moving objects, radiant and electrical energy, working predicted or irregular hours.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or Equivalent. Several years of grounds experience are required for this position. Knowledge of institutional and correctional work gang policy. Must be in reasonably good health. Must supervise offenders and exercise sound judgements in overseeing inmates’ performance. Verbally communicate on the telephone radio or face to face. Able to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, pull, lift, reach, turn, climb stairs, and ladders. Able to see, hear, write, count, read, speak, and interpret policies. Demonstrated ability to operate a motor vehicle and moving/motorized equipment. Must use a computer and operate both hand power tools. Must have good manual dexterity and hand/eye coordination.

Marijuana use is prohibited for positions that require possession of a firearm or a Commercial Driver’s License in the performance of official duties such as Corrections Officers, Probation Officers, Tractor Trailer Drivers and others.
