Overview
The Environment Agency is fully committed to inclusivity and equal opportunities, offering flexible work arrangements for all our vacancies. We invite you to join a diverse environment where every voice is heard and valued. The UK’s strategy to deliver Net Zero is driving transformation in the energy sectors, which are responsible for 24% of UK GHG emissions. To achieve this, the sector must fully decarbonise by 2050, double electricity production, and transition quickly to sustainable sources of power while maximising domestic energy. Through effective regulation, we must ensure that energy sectors protect people and the environment from emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
We are recruiting a fixed‑term role, up to 2 years, for a senior advisor with experience working in or regulating energy sectors—including combustion plants, waste incineration, and refineries.
Responsibilities
* Provide expert support and technical leadership through advice, guidance, and training.
* Develop strategy for the sectors and produce the tools to regulate, support development and deliver environmental outcomes.
* Commission and manage external research projects where needed.
* Work with internal and external stakeholders such as Defra, DESNZ, internal operations teams, trade associations and other key industry players.
Incident Role
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be asked to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.
Team
The Energy & COMAH team is part of the Energy and Manufacturing Industries Regulation of Environment & Business (E&B) Directorate. Our technical experts lead on the definition of standards for our sectors, providing strategic direction, tools to support regulation, guidance and training to deliver new duties, and environmental best practice.
Experience & Skills Required
* Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, actively encouraging diversity issues in work.
* Relevant technical and regulatory knowledge, and experience of the work area for the role, including control measures for emissions to air where relevant.
* Ability to build and maintain good relationships with colleagues, operators, partner regulators, government, trade bodies and academia.
* Work cooperatively as part of a team to achieve common goals.
