A Teaching Assistant (TA) supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) plays a vital role in ensuring all children can access learning and make progress. The TA provides targeted support within the classroom, delivers interventions, and assists the class teacher in creating an inclusive, safe, and engaging learning environment. Key Responsibilities Provide 1:1 or small-group support for pupils with SEN in line with EHCPs or individual support plans. Adapt resources and activities to meet pupils learning, sensory, or behavioural needs. Use strategies recommended by SENCO or external specialists (e.g., speech therapists, occupational therapists). Monitor and record pupil progress, behaviour, and engagement. Promote independence, confidence, and self-regulation skills. Classroom Support Assist the class teacher in delivering high-quality teaching and learning. Support pupils during whole-class sessions, group work, and independent activities. Prepare learning materials, resources, and visual supports where needed. Help maintain a positive, inclusive learning environment. Behaviour & Pastoral Support Implement behaviour-support strategies tailored to individual pupils. Provide emotional and social support to children who may struggle with confidence, interaction, or regulation. Supervise pupils during transitions, break times, and lunch as required. Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils to encourage engagement and wellbeing. Collaboration & Professional Duties Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and wider school team. Communicate effectively with parents and carers when needed. Participate in relevant training, meetings, and reviews (e.g., EHCP review meetings). Uphold safeguarding and follow all school policies and procedures. Essential Skills & Qualities Good understanding of SEN such as ASD, ADHD, SEMH, dyslexia, or speech and language needs. Patience, empathy, and a nurturing approach. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Ability to use initiative and work independently when required. Resilience and a positive attitude when supporting challenging behaviour. Qualifications & Experience Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent) preferred. Experience supporting children with SEN, ideally in a school setting. Training in areas such as Autism, Team Teach, Makaton, or phonics (desirable but not essential). Enhanced DBS check.
