Sheffield Hallam University Board of Governors are seeking individuals who have substantial and broad experience in external organisations which is directly relevant to the University’s strategic aims and ambitions. Individuals should demonstrate a track record of achievement and contribution which has national and international impact. They should have:
• Experience of the governance or strategic management of complex organisations
• An understanding of and commitment to the purposes of higher education
• Ability to take an independent and objective view
• Ability to take a strategic overview and contribute to the University’s strategic development.
In building it’s membership the Board’s objective is to have a balance between locally, regionally and nationally based governors and public, private and voluntary sector experience. The membership will reflect a diversity of characteristics including gender, disability, age, race, and the representation of other minority communities. We activity encourage applications from Women, Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic candidates.
The current vacancies are:
• Two independent members with high level and strategic financial management skills and / or Human Resources and Senior Staff Remuneration
• One independent member to act as the Lead Governor for the new London Campus
The Board is particular seeking individuals who have experience and expertise in one or more areas of:
• Business and commerce
• Finance and audit
• Estate and property development
• Strategic oversight of IT including digital transformation programmes
• Human Resources and Senior Staff remuneration and review
Independent members of the Board must be over 18 years of age.
A person who is employed at the University (whether or not as a teacher), a full time student at the University or an elected member of any local authority is not eligible for appointment as an independent member of the Board of Governors. A local authority is defined as a county council, a district council, a London borough council, or the Common council of the City of London. The definition does not include parish councils.
Time commitment and general requirements
The Board normally meets six times per year in late afternoon. Members of the Board are expected to support the Board’s committees, a minimum of four and a maximum of eight additional meetings. The Board holds strategy days and briefing workshops and members are encouraged to attend training and development activities relevant to their role.
Board members are invited to participate in a number of regular and ad hoc University events. These include the annual graduation ceremonies, civic functions and professorial and public lectures.
Board members will also act as ambassadors for the University, and will be supported in promoting the University through their professional and social networks.
Board members are required to engage quickly with the issues facing the higher education sector so that they can make an effective contribution on joining. Members of the Board are required to keep their skills updated so that they can engage constructively in debate and play an active role.
The role is not eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route so if you are an international applicant, you will need to ensure you have an appropriate visa to evidence the necessary right to work in the UK.
