The Pilgrims’ School – a leading independent prep school in a historic ‘city meets country’ setting in the heart of Winchester – is seeking an excellent and inspirational Head of Art to join the team on a part-time basis and foster self-expression in students. Key Responsibilities Providing an Art teaching specialism to boys in Years 3 to 8. Collaborating within and co-designing a creative and interdisciplinary curriculum, particularly in liaison with the Head of D&T, and creating, maintaining and developing appropriate documentation, including schemes of work and the departmental handbook. Working with the Head of D&T to promote and support the teaching of the curriculum to boys in the Pre-Prep, advising and helping colleagues to inspire young minds. Motivating and inspiring pupils so that they enjoy their learning, can manage their own learning effectively and want to aim as high as possible. Communicating with and reporting to parents. Exploring appropriate use of digital learning technologies within the pupils’ learning journey. Working with the Head of D&T to curate and rotate the display of pupils’ work in locations around the school. Keeping abreast of information concerning external curriculum developments. Inspiring, stretching, guiding and supporting those pupils capable of attempting Art scholarships. Promoting Art outside the classroom, including organising opportunities and events that enhance and promote key facets of the subject. Running art-related sessions as part of the School’s partnership work with local primary schools. Analysing pupil performance throughout the year. Producing and managing the departmental budget and overseeing the ordering and allocation of resources. Playing a full role in the life of a busy boarding school, including after-school activities and being a tutor for a Middle Prep or Upper Prep tutor group. Skills and Experience Good degree or equivalent experience. An excellent classroom teacher with the ability to understand, engage and inspire children in the Year 3–8 age range. The ability to set and achieve high standards, maintaining a well-run, effective department space and ensuring the boys contribute to the same. The ability to communicate professionally and effectively with parents. A commitment to the aims and ethos of the School. Excellent subject knowledge, including knowledge and understanding of drawing and painting techniques; pottery, printmaking and 3D modelling skills; and an appreciation of Art History and the art of different cultures.
