Physiotherapy Technical Instructor (Neurosurgery)
Physiotherapy Department at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust is looking for a flexible, enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the Neurosurgical physiotherapy team. The post holder will work alongside Physiotherapists and the multidisciplinary team within the inpatient service, providing acute assessment, treatment and discharge planning for a wide range of patients including those with brain and spinal surgery or traumatic brain and spinal cord injury.
The post holder will support the Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy teams to deliver physiotherapy to patients within the neurosurgical inpatient service over a seven‑day period. The role involves a range of clinical and non‑clinical duties under the supervision of a senior Physiotherapist, including treatment and rehabilitation programmes, first‑contact assessment, patient reviews and contribution to a competency framework.
Key Responsibilities
* Work without direct supervision, under the direction of a Physiotherapist, performing specific tasks for individual or group patients within the neurosurgical inpatient service
* Deliver treatment and rehabilitation programmes within protocols and competencies specific to this post
* Act as first contact in specific situations and perform patient reviews within a competency framework
* Assist in the training, development and supervision of Physiotherapy Assistants
* Maintain confidentiality and update patient records accurately and timely
* Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary team members regarding changes in patient condition and progress
* Participate in team rota to provide weekend service to inpatient wards
Qualifications & Experience
* Demonstrable experience as a Physiotherapy Assistant or equivalent
* Broad experience working with patients in an inpatient healthcare setting, including neurosurgery, brain and spinal cord injury patients
* GCSEs Grade A–C (or equivalent) in Maths and English, or Functional Skills Level 2
* NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care or equivalent diploma level in therapy/exercise rehabilitation
* Up to date CPD evidence and proactive attitude to professional development
* Computer literate and strong communicator
* Desirable: membership of professional body, previous experience working with neurosurgical physiotherapists, band 3 competencies
Salary & Working Pattern
* Band 3 – £24,937 to £26,598 per year (per annum)
* Location: Derriford Hospital, Derriford Road, Plymouth, PL6 8DH
* Contract: Permanent, Full‑time
