Overview
Glaucoma fellow position primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, starting August 2026. The post is for an initial 6 months, with potential extension to 12 months subject to satisfactory progress.
Responsibilities
* Clinical management
* Laser treatment (SLT and YAG)
* Develop skill in performing complex cataract surgery
* Traditional glaucoma surgeries (aqueous shunts, trabeculectomy) and Preserflo shunt
* MIGS procedures (KDB, Hydrus stent, GATT)
The responsibilities also include potential work in other parts of the Trust (e.g., Witney, Abingdon, Banbury) as required.
Qualifications and Experience
* Candidates should have Outcome 6 at ARCP before commencing in post or be post CCST or equivalent and wish to specialise in glaucoma
* Post-core ophthalmology training with experience as an independent cataract surgeon (including complex cataract surgery) and some glaucoma training (clinics and glaucoma surgery)
* Training in all aspects of glaucoma provided during the post
Clinical Trials and Research
A clinical trials unit is active and research opportunities are available and encouraged. Additional funding to attend conferences may be provided if Oxford-based research is presented (e.g., ESCRS, UKEGS, ARVO).
On-Call and Training Status
* Participation in the on-call rota is the norm at a frequency of 1:11
* Not an approved training post
Department and Environment
The postholder will be based at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, with the possibility of time in other parts of the Trust. The department has a large ophthalmology team and extensive support from optometry, orthoptics, imaging and nursing staff. The Oxford Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Service is part of the department. The Oxford Eye Hospital is an internationally recognized centre of excellence in research.
Teaching and Education
The post-holder will be expected to participate in teaching clinical students, training junior doctors, and clinical examinations as part of everyday clinical activity. There is an expectation to engage in some research activity during the post.
Timetable and Job Plan
The timetable is flexible and will evolve with service needs. A formal job plan will be agreed with the appointee and the supervising Consultant(s) on behalf of the Clinical Director/Medical Director.
Facilities
Good library facilities are available at the John Radcliffe and other central Oxford hospitals.
