Lead Design Engineer – Main Plant, Cambuslang. Salary circa £67,000 per annum plus excellent benefits. Flexible hybrid working.
With plans for SP Energy Networks (SPEN), part of the ScottishPower Group, to invest over £10bn in transmission projects across our transmission network in central and southern Scotland by 2030, the Main Plant Engineering team will support SPEN to deliver the required transmission network to meet UK and Scottish government targets. This is an opportunity to be at the forefront of innovative engineering and help path the way to NetZero using new technologies to develop and deliver Main Plant engineering solutions for transmission networks (132kV and above).
You will be working with a broad range of stakeholders across SPEN, the Iberdrola Group and external bodies at a pivotal time as ScottishPower leads climate action and growth investment.
What You’ll Be Doing
* Preparing basic and detailed engineering specifications and designs for switchgear, transformers and other electrical network equipment.
* Define Main Plant and auxiliary apparatus requirements for input to System Construction Authorisation (SCA), Project Technical Specifications and BETTA documentation; advise on construction and outage programmes.
* Ensure designs and equipment are in accordance with current legislation, policies and operational requirements.
* Prepare engineering documentation following quality processes to meet deliverables for PQP’s and BETTA.
* Provide technical support on the design, construction and operation of Main Plant and lead the technical resolution of site/construction substation electrical issues.
* Provide technical assessment of tender submissions, preparation/review of Main Plant design drawings and specifications.
* Contribute to training needs assessment for new products and develop/deliver technical, operational and safety packages.
* Liaise across multi-disciplinary engineering teams to provide end-to-end design solutions.
* Maintain awareness of technological advances and industry best practice.
* Evaluate and apply new ideas, technical developments, new equipment and alternative-working methods to provide cost savings, efficiencies and improved safety; reflect in review of policies and standards.
* Assess engineering documentation from feasibility to detailed design in line with business requirements and support preparation of budgets for new projects.
* Mentor and support other members of the engineering team.
What You’ll Bring
Strong problem-solving and communication (verbal and written) skills are vital; these will enable you to devise solutions to complex problems, apply innovative thinking and convey technical concepts to audiences at all levels. They will also enable you to establish effective working relationships with stakeholders.
To Be Successful, As a Minimum You Will Have
* Degree in an engineering discipline or HND with relevant experience
* Chartered Engineer Status (or working towards)
* Good interpersonal and communication skills and ability to form effective working relationships with other individuals, departments and businesses
* Ability to apply CDM and Health & Safety best practice in a design environment
* Ability to investigate and understand technical characteristics of substation plant and associated equipment
* Understanding of plant and equipment deployed for transmission networks and how it is operated/maintained
* Experience in the implementation of new technologies and engineering solutions to achieve reductions in project lifetime costs
* Experience in electrical infrastructure projects and knowledge in one or more of the following areas at voltages from 33kV to 400kV:
o Switchgear
o Transformers
o Transmission and/or Distribution system design
