JOB DESCRIPTION

Newham University Hospital (NUH), as part of Barts Health NHS Trust (BH), is a busy, 350-bed hospital that serves one of Britain’s most diverse, fastest growing, and youngest populations. The Radiology department in Newham University Hospital (NU) is a modern and well equipped department with 4 digital general X-ray rooms (DR), 1 modern Fluoroscopy screening room, six ultrasound rooms, two state-of-the-art spectral CT scanner (the second CT scanner is being replaced by a new one now), two new state-of-the-art wide-bore MRI scanners (1.5 Tesla and 3 Tesla), and a digital mammography equipped with tomosynthesis and a biopsy module. The department is fully digital and paperless since 2007.

The post holder will join a team composed of 14.3 WTE radiology consultants and 7 specialty doctors in Radiology.

Job Description

Job Title: Locum Specialty Doctor (12 months fixed term)

Grade: Medical & Dental

Programmed Activities: 10/week

Department: Radiology - NUH

Reports To: Clinical Director

Accountable To: Medical Director

Main duties of the job

This is a 10 PAs full time fixed term job for one year to cover vacancies and complement our specialty doctors’ team. The post holder is expected to work basic 10 sessions (40 hours) a week, inclusive of any on-call (or night shift OOH) commitment if needed. The contract could be renewed upon agreement of both parties.

The On-call is first on-call on-site type – working with a consultant as a second on-call available remotely.

The appointee(s) are expected to report plain x-rays, perform/report various fluoroscopy exams and different types of ultrasound examinations independently (including abdo/pelv, transvaginal, DVT scans, soft tissue scans, etc). The appointee(s) are expected to be perfectly capable of reporting all types of CT scans (Emergency and ambulatory care) during the day and OOH. They are also expected to develop their skills in MR reporting as needed. Subspecialisation interest will be requested and encouraged.

The appointee(s) will be expected to get engaged in mandatory annual appraisal and CPD activities. They will contribute to governance and discrepancy meetings and should be able to demonstrate a background in good quality audits.

The appointee is expected to be willing and ready to teach the undergraduate medical students, student radiographers and ultrasonographers.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Medical qualification from a recognized University or Medical School & GMC registered or registerable soon.

Desirable criteria

2. FRCR or equivalent degree in Radiology

Experience

Essential criteria

3. At least 3 years experience working in a radiology department.
4. Experience of the UK National Health Service
5. Must have basic interventional radiology skills, e.g. Drain insertions, pleural tapping, percutaneous biopsies.

Desirable criteria

6. Carotid ultrasound experience
7. Mammography experience
8. Obstetric/Antenatal ultrasound skills with relevant accreditation

Training

Essential criteria

9. At least 3 years of training in a teaching hospital setting.

Desirable criteria

10. Five years of training in a teaching hospital setting.

Knowledge

Essential criteria

11. A broad range of knowledge in other relevant disciplines

Desirable criteria

12. A good grasp of current radiology literature

Teaching

Essential criteria

13. Ability to teach essential radiology to pre-graduate medical students, radiographers, and junior medical staff.
