Job Description

The Environment Agency are fully committed to inclusivity and equal opportunities, offering flexible work arrangements for all our vacancies. We are recruiting a fixed‑term role, up to 2 years, for an individual with experience of working in or regulating energy sectors, including combustion plants, waste incineration, and refineries.

The UK’s Net Zero strategy is driving a transformation in the energy sectors, which are responsible for 24% of UK greenhouse gas emissions. Energy security and decarbonisation pressures require rapid transition to sustainable power sources. Through effective regulation we must protect people and the environment from emissions and help the sector adapt to climate change.

Responsibilities

* Provide expert support and technical leadership through advice, guidance, and training to registered operators and regulators.
* Develop strategy for the energy sectors and produce the tools required to regulate, support development, and deliver environmental outcomes.
* Commission and manage external research projects where needed.
* Work with internal and external stakeholders such as Defra, DESNZ, internal operations teams, trade associations and other key industry players.
* Respond to incidents and provide business continuity support during an incident.

Qualifications and Experience

* Experience regulating energy sectors, including combustion plants, waste incineration and refineries.
* Relevant technical and regulatory knowledge, including control measures for emissions to air where applicable.
* Ability to build and maintain good relationships with colleagues, operators, partner regulators, government, trade bodies and academia.
* Demonstrated teamwork skills and the ability to work cooperatively as part of a team to achieve common goals.
* Capability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures and actively promote diversity issues.

Other Information

Contract length: up to 2 years (fixed‑term). Expectation of some travel. The interview will be conducted in Birmingham by the end of November. The vacancy closes at the end of October.

Applications will be assessed using competency questions. Feedback is not available at the application stage.

Contact person: Emma Preston or Charlotte Sholl – combustion@environment-agency.gov.uk

We are fully committed to having a diverse and inclusive workforce, and we welcome flexible working patterns, including job share. We also have a Guaranteed Interview Policy to support those with a disability whose application meets the minimum criteria.

The Environment Agency is a Non‑Departmental Public Body and is not part of the Civil Service. Applicants currently working in local government or other bodies covered by the HMRC Redundancy Payments (Continuity of Employment) Order may be eligible for continuous service.
