JOB TITLE: Teacher - Special
REPORTS TO: Principal
Responsibilities and Duties
* Exercise of general professional duties
* 2) Exercise of particular duties
* Planning: 1. Planning and preparing courses and lessons; 1.2 Teaching, according to educational needs, the pupils assigned to him/her, including setting and marking of work in school and elsewhere; 1.3 Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils.
* General: 2.1 Promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and of any class or group; 2.2 Providing advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters, further education and careers; 2.3 Making records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils; 2.4 Communicating with parents; 2.5 Communicating and co-operating with external bodies as approved; 2.6 Participating in meetings.
* Assessment/Reporting: Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references for pupils.
* Staff Development/Professional Development: Participating in staff development and performance review; reviewing teaching methods and programmes; pursuing further training; advising and cooperating on courses of study and pastoral arrangements.
* Discipline/Health and Safety: Maintaining order and safeguarding health and safety; participating in meetings related to curriculum, administration or pastoral arrangements.
* Public Examinations: Participating in preparations for public examinations and assessments, recording and reporting results, and supervising examination processes.
* Review and Development of Management Activities/Administration: Contributing to selection and development of other teachers; coordinating or managing work; participating in curriculum, organisation and pastoral development; administrative tasks and management of resources; attendance and supervision duties as required.
* Number of days/Hours of work: Availability for 195 days per year; hours and break provisions; limits on weekly teaching hours and mid-day supervision; definitions of year and week.
* Staff cover: Supervising pupils when a teacher is unavailable, subject to published conditions. This job description is a guideline and may be adjusted. Promoting good relations and equality at all times.

SECTION 1 - ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
* Qualifications/ Professional Membership: Holds a teaching qualification that meets recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
* Experience: Minimum of 2 years’ demonstrable experience using a range of effective classroom strategies to support and challenge learners of all abilities, including those with Special Educational Needs; experience in developing positive relationships; experience working with professionals to meet SEND needs; experience with specialist equipment or skills for SEND; experience using digital media/technology to enhance teaching and learning.
* Other: Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
SECTION 2 - ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
* Knowledge: Knowledge of the NI Curriculum, safeguarding and child protection policy, SEND Code of Practice and implications, current assessment methods for SEND, approaches to promoting positive behaviour, IT systems and digital tools.
* Skills / Abilities: Effective teaching and classroom management; inclusive learning environment; initiative and problem-solving; collaboration to promote positive relationships; teamwork and motivation.
* Values Orientation / School Ethos: Evidence of alignment with the School’s Values/ethos.
SECTION 3 - DESIRABLE CRITERIA
* Desirable Criteria: Experience assisting/co-ordinating ICT and Art; current Team Teach certificate for positive handling (if applicable).
Disclosure of Criminal Background
The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines working directly with children or young people as regulated activity. If recommended for appointment to a post involving regulated activity, an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background will be required. You will be expected to meet the cost of the Enhanced Disclosure.
