Due to business growth, an additional Senior Software Engineer / Architect is required to deliver current and next generation Mine Counter Measures capabilities. The role is full-time on site in Cheadle Heath and may involve occasional travel to sister company and client sites.
Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be involved in a wide range of activities from defining/updating the technical solution, contributing to system requirements, meeting with customers and key stakeholders, guiding and advising the development team, and supporting the entire project team from start to end. In this role, due to small team size, the SW Architect will participate in some software development activities. Training and mentoring will be provided; however, this is a senior role and the individual is expected to be self-driven and able to drive others. This role will involve bids, architecture and design, development, and support. Occasional travel to client sites is expected. The candidate will report to the portfolio Chief Software Architect and Head of SW Delivery, with input to senior management, customers, engineering delivery managers, project managers, and developers.
The Software Architect is responsible for defining a feasible, maintainable and scalable software architecture that is consistent with the solution/system architecture, and for ensuring that design takes into account performance, robustness, safety, and cybersecurity constraints. They support the development team in their rise in competence in architecture fields and coding.

* Demonstrable experience with software architecture of large systems or development of large complex systems
* Confident and commercially aware when presenting to senior management and senior customers
* Able to adjust the level of technical detail to suit the audience and collaborate with developers, engineering delivery managers, other architects, product line architects, and customers
* Confidence and ability using modelling tools such as Enterprise Architect (training provided if necessary)
* Ability to show strategic awareness and make balanced, defendable decisions
* Confidence to challenge others and openness to being challenged
* Ability to consider the whole system, including system and hardware interactions and requirements
* Ability to describe and hold detailed conversations at all levels from development to business strategy
* Ability to balance short-term project goals with longer-term product roadmap goals
Technical skills (mandatory)
* C++, Java, Python (detailed knowledge of C++ with appreciation of Java and Python)
* Networking (routing, firewalls, switch config)
* Linux (ideally Red Hat)
* Hardware (basic knowledge of components, connectors and hardware architecture)
* Software development and architecting of real-time systems
Beneficial skills
* Security (SELinux, STIG / CIS lockdown, cryptographic principles, TPM)
* Software build processes (Make, CMake, Maven, Gradle, Jenkins, git, artifactory)
* Embedded software development
* Rhapsody or Enterprise Architect
Industry experience
* Experience in Defence, Telecommunications or Engineering industries
* Experience of Radio Communication systems
The Senior Software Engineer / Architect will be responsible for architecture definition that is feasible, maintainable and scalable and aligned with the overall solution and system architecture. They will ensure design accounts for performance, robustness, safety and cybersecurity constraints and will support the development team in advancing their architectural competence.

It may be advantageous if clearance is already held; if not, the successful applicant must undergo, achieve, and maintain SC prior to commencing employment.
