PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER
* Exercise of general professional duties
* A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require:
o if employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal;
o if employed by a board on terms under which he is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school in which he may, for the time being, be required to work as a teacher.
* Exercise of particular duties
o A teacher employed as a teacher (other than a principal) shall perform, in accordance with directions reasonably given by the principal, such particular duties as may be assigned.
o A teacher to whom paragraph 1(b) refers shall perform, in accordance with any direction reasonably given by the board or by the principal, such particular duties as may be assigned.
* Planning
o Plan and prepare courses and lessons.
o Teach, according to pupils' needs, including setting and marking work to be carried out by pupils in school and elsewhere.
o Assess, record and report on pupils' development, progress and attainment.
* General
o Promote the progress and well‑being of pupils.
o Provide advice and guidance to pupils on educational, social matters and future careers.
o Make records and reports on pupils’ personal and social needs.
o Communicate and consult with parents.
o Co‑operate with external persons or bodies approved by the employing authority and the Board of Governors.
o Participate in meetings related to the above purposes.
* Assessment / Reporting
o Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to pupils, except when this might compromise the teacher’s position.
* Staff Development / Professional Development
o Participate in staff development schemes and performance reviews.
o Review teaching methods and work programmes.
o Participate in arrangements for further training and professional development.
o Advise and cooperate with the principal and other teachers on preparing and developing courses, materials, programmes, methods and pastoral arrangements.
* Discipline / Health and Safety
o Maintain good order and discipline among pupils, safeguard their health and safety on premises and during school activities elsewhere.
o Participate in meetings at the school that relate to curriculum or administration.
* Public Examinations
o Prepare pupils for public examinations and assess pupils for the purposes of such examinations; record and report assessments and supervise pupils during examination.
* Review and Development of Management Activities / Administration
o Contribute to selection for appointment and professional development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers.
o Coordinate or manage the work of other teachers.
o Participate in administrative and organisational tasks, including supervising support staff and ordering equipment and materials.
* Number of days / Hours of work
o A full‑time teacher shall be available for work on 195 days in any year, not more than 190 days teaching in a classroom situation.
o A teacher shall perform duties at times and places specified by the principal or the board for 1,265 hours in any year, exclusive of preparation, marking, and travel.
o A teacher may not teach more than 25 hours in a week in a primary or special school and 23.5 hours in a secondary school.
o Unless employed as a mid‑day supervisor, a teacher shall not be required to undertake mid‑day supervision.
o Breaks of at least 30 minutes between 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm (or 2:30 pm for nursery schools). A ‘year’ means 12 months from 31 July and a ‘week’ means 7 days from Sunday.
* Staff cover
o Supervise and teach any pupils whose teacher is not available, subject to enrolment and class‑type restrictions.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
All applicants must clearly demonstrate how they meet the criteria in the application form. Failure to do so may result in not being shortlisted. The selection process is based on essential criteria and, where appropriate, desirable criteria.
SECTION 1 – ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
* Qualifications / Professional Membership
o Hold a teaching qualification recognised for grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland.
o Hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification prepared to teach English as the main subject.
* Experience
o Minimum of 1 year demonstrable experience teaching English at Key Stage 3, achieving positive learning outcomes.
* Other
o Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up the post.
SECTION 2 – ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL CRITERIA (INTERVIEW)
* Knowledge
o Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum.
o Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice.
o Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice.
o Knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to meet pupils’ learning needs.
o Knowledge of IT systems such as digital classroom tools and mobile technologies.
o Knowledge of current assessment methods to inform teaching.
* Skills / Abilities
o Effective teaching and classroom management skills to raise achievement.
o Proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
o Ability to work collaboratively to promote positive relationships.
o Ability to work as an effective team member, and to motivate self and others.
* Values Orientation / Identification with School Ethos
o Evidence of alignment with the school’s values/ethos.
SECTION 3 – DESIRABLE CRITERIA
* Minimum of 1 year demonstrable experience teaching English at Key Stage 4 or 5 to achieve positive learning outcomes.
* Minimum of 3 years demonstrable experience teaching English at Key Stage 4 to achieve positive learning outcomes.
DISCLOSURE OF CRIMINAL BACKGROUND
The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines working directly with children or young people as ‘regulated activity’. If appointed to such a post, an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background will be required and the applicant will bear the cost.
