About The Role
Environmental Health Officer – Braintree DC, Braintree District Council. Temporary, full time. Pay: £45.00 – £50.00 per hour (umbrella). Location: Braintree. Closing date: 15th May 2026.
Essex County Council is supporting Braintree District Council to recruit an Environmental Health Officer / Environmental Health Technical Officer on an initial 3‑month temporary basis. You will be required to work in the Council offices or in the district during the placement.
The Role
The officer will undertake work relating to statutory nuisance, filthy and verminous premises, pest/waste accumulation issues and other pollution and public health functions. This will include primarily complaints‑driven work and appropriate enforcement, including serving of notices as necessary. The role may also involve reviewing and responding to planning and licensing consultations and delivering public health initiatives.
Principle Accountabilities
* Investigate complaints and requests for service in the area.
* Record and pursue action on all matters of environmental significance within the area.
* Carry out work within a team of officers and cover absent colleagues.
* Support and comply with quality practices as described in the Corporate Quality Policy.
* Attend and advise Area Committees, if required, presenting reports on responsibilities.
* Observe the Council and Directorate safety policies.
* Apply and promote the Council’s Equal Opportunities Policy in all areas of employment and service delivery.
* Report to the Environmental Health Manager any duties that cannot be carried out.
* Willingness and ability to work outside normal office hours when required.
* Support the business, including maintaining business continuity during civil emergencies.
* Apply and promote the Council’s Safeguarding Procedure in all areas of employment and service delivery.
The Experience You Will Bring
* Degree in Environmental Health or equivalent (desirable).
* Registered with the Environmental Health Registration Board (desirable).
* Understanding of customer needs for regulated activities.
* Experience securing regulatory compliance through various means.
* Statutory nuisance investigation experience.
* Experience investigating filthy, verminous, pest-related and hoarding cases.
* Planning and licensing consultation response experience.
* Knowledge of drainage investigations and enforcement, including in a rural setting.
