What you'll do
In this delegated underwriting role, you will drive the success of complex insurance programmes. Your day‑to‑day activities will include evaluating risks using advanced analytical tools, negotiating terms with brokers or clients, ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks such as FCA and Lloyd's requirements, and producing precise documentation that meets contract certainty standards. You will collaborate closely with internal teams—finance, operations, and senior management—to ensure seamless execution of underwriting strategies.
* Contribute to the development and implementation of operational plans that align with Aspen's wider business strategy.
* Apply specialist underwriting expertise to assess, price, and manage risks within delegated authority limits, maintaining profitability across diverse insurance portfolios.
* Advise colleagues as a subject matter expert by providing guidance on underwriting best practices, policy interpretation, and compliance with internal standards and external regulations.
* Negotiate terms, rates and conditions for both new and renewal business while ensuring contract certainty documentation is produced accurately.
* Support credit control processes by collaborating closely with finance teams to ensure timely payment collection and accurate record keeping.
* Participate in portfolio reviews and data analysis initiatives to monitor progress towards business objectives.
* Act as a referral point for less experienced underwriters within the team, offering mentorship and support to foster professional growth.
* Produce detailed management information reports for senior stakeholders to facilitate effective monitoring of underwriting activity.
* Maintain up‑to‑date records on relevant systems to ensure accuracy in relation to aggregate exposures and risk profiling.
* Manage a team of junior practitioners by setting clear accountabilities and supporting their development.
What you bring
* Extensive experience in underwriting within specialised or complex casualty product lines.
* A thorough understanding of how current market conditions impact specific classes of business or portfolios.
* Technical proficiency in class‑specific underwriting parameters, including reinsurance structures, and familiarity with delegated authorities.
* Working knowledge of risk profiling methodologies, pricing tools such as loss models and their practical application.
* Comprehensive awareness of legal and regulatory requirements (including FCA and Lloyd's regulation).
* Exceptional interpersonal skills combined with strong communication abilities.
* Excellent organisational skills empowering you to manage conflicting priorities effectively.
* People‑management experience: mentoring, supervision and succession planning.
