The Service & Team
We have an opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the Charging and Assessment Team as a Finance Assessment Officer. The Charging and Assessment Team is a dynamic and friendly team within the Safe and Caring Communities Service. We offer flexible working where you will be expected to work some days in the office but will also have the opportunity to work from home, with occasional visits to service users in the community.
The Role
Conduct financial assessments by phone and in person for individuals receiving care at home or residential services. Carry out high‑level contact with service users via telephone and email, liaising directly with users and their families to ensure assessments are completed fairly, consistently and promptly. Provide funding and welfare benefit advice and liaise with internal and external stakeholders including care providers and operational teams.
This is a public/customer‑facing role, where the statutory English language requirement for public sector workers applies.
All candidates will be subject to an enhanced criminal record disclosure check.
What you’ll need to succeed
Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills through frequent contact with customers. Attention to detail, self‑motivation and teamwork. Good literacy and numeracy skills, proven by GCSE grades 9‑4 (A‑C) in Maths and English or equivalent work experience.
Experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel), diary management, prioritisation and problem‑solving essential. Knowledge of Adult Social Care and DWP benefits desirable but not essential; full training will be provided. A can‑do attitude and willingness to learn and enhance existing skills is the most important attribute.
What you’ll get in return
Cornwall Council offers a reward and benefits package to attract, motivate and reward employees. Flexible working options are available to help provide a greater work/life balance while still meeting service needs.
We are an equal opportunities and Disability Confident employer, and we will assess applicants on their merits. Cornwall Council is committed to safeguarding and follows safer recruitment principles to ensure staff and volunteers are suitable to work with children, young people and adults at risk.
