Farm-to-table lead coordinator

Manchester
Jewish Volunteering Network
Coordinator
Posted: 2 March
Offer description

We are seeking an inspiring and hands‑on Farm‑to‑Table Coordinator to lead the heart of our vegetable garden. This pivotal role is about more than just growing crops; it is about managing the journey of our produce from the first seed sown to the final harvest. You will be the visionary behind our edible landscape, ensuring our garden is productive, sustainable, and a welcoming space for our community of volunteers.

* Seasonal Crop Strategy: Create and oversee a year‑round planting calendar, ensuring a diverse and consistent yield of high‑quality British seasonal vegetables.
* Volunteer Mentorship: Lead and motivate our team of volunteers, providing clear guidance on organic growing techniques and fostering a collaborative team spirit.
* Soil & Ecosystem Health: Champion organic principles, including crop rotation, composting, and natural pest management, to ensure the long‑term vitality of the land.
* Harvest & Distribution Management: Coordinate the weekly harvest, ensuring all produce is gathered at its peak and efficiently prepared for its "table" destination.
* Garden Infrastructure Oversight: Maintain the functional beauty of the garden, including the care of raised beds and communal tool sheds.
* Sustainability & Biodiversity: Promote a thriving garden environment by integrating companion planting and nectar‑rich flowers to support our local pollinators.

As our Farm‑to‑Table Coordinator, you will transform our garden into a "Living Classroom" and a source of organic nourishment. By overseeing the growth of fresh produce, you are not just growing vegetables; you are cultivating a space where Jewish identity and environmental stewardship meet.

Your leadership will ensure the garden remains a vibrant, accessible green space where people of all ages can connect with the land, their heritage, and each other, ensuring that Jewish life in Brighton & Hove is both visible and flourishing.

What additional skills or experience you should have

We are looking for a knowledgeable grower with a passion for organic horticulture and the ability to lead a diverse team of volunteers with patience and warmth. You should have a practical understanding of the UK growing season, from soil preparation to harvest, alongside the organisational skills to manage a productive planting calendar. As our hub is a community space, an Enhanced DBS check is required (which we will arrange), and an appreciation for Jewish cultural traditions and seasonal festivals is highly desirable. Above all, you should be a clear communicator who enjoys sharing the "seed‑to‑table" journey with others, ensuring our garden remains a safe, inclusive, and flourishing resource for all of Brighton & Hove.

What training we will provide for you

We will provide a comprehensive induction to our dynamic Brighton & Hove hub, ensuring you feel confident and supported from day one. This includes tailored guidance on integrating Jewish cultural traditions and seasonal festivals into the garden’s cycle, alongside essential training in safeguarding, health and safety, and risk assessment.

What you will get out of volunteering for us

Volunteering as our Farm‑to‑Table Coordinator offers the unique reward of Tikkun Olam, repairing the world, by cultivating a sustainable food source in the heart of Brighton & Hove. You will enjoy the physical and mental benefits of "green therapy" while building deep, meaningful connections within a vibrant and welcoming community hub. This role provides an excellent platform to hone your leadership and horticultural skills, all while immersing yourself in Jewish culture and traditions. Most importantly, you will lead a project that nourishes both the body and the spirit, ensuring Jewish life remains visible and flourishing, with the added bonus of sharing in the very freshest seasonal harvests!

Morning Afternoon Evening Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday

We are happy to be flexible on location and/or times if required.

Our vision is for Brighton & Hove to be a city where Jewish life is vibrant, accessible, and embraced by a connected community. Anchored by our dynamic hub, we empower individuals to engage with their Jewish identity, celebrate Jewish culture and heritage, and build meaningful connections within and beyond the Jewish community.

We aspire to be a place of belonging for Jewish people locally, nationally, and internationally, and a cultural and educational resource for the wider community, ensuring Jewish life in Brighton & Hove can thrive for generations to come.

We do this through a vibrant community hub that brings people together. We deliver outstanding kosher food, purposeful programming, and welcoming places to gather, learn, and celebrate. From our nursery, workspace, and restaurant to residential homes, we create spaces where Jewish life can flourish.

We offer meaningful opportunities for people to connect across backgrounds and faiths to participate in Jewish culture in ways that matter to them. By making Jewish life more visible and accessible, we empower people to find their place and play an active role in the story of Brighton’s Jewish community.
